30:48Parenting comes with a lot of expectations, but have you ever stopped to ask where they come from? On this episode of This Is Woman’s Work , we unpack the myth of “the good mother” with Nancy Reddy , author of The Good Mother Myth . Nancy shares her personal experience of confronting the unrealistic ideal of motherhood: endlessly patient, always available, and completely selfless. She hilariously and heartbreakingly debunks these outdated ideals, rooted in flawed mid-20th-century research by figures like Harry Harlow and Dr. Spock. Nancy explains how bad science from the past continues to haunt modern parenting, creating pressure, guilt, and shame for today’s mothers. But this conversation is about more than debunking myths—it’s about empowerment. Because when you prioritize what matters and let go of perfectionism, you’re not just doing woman’s work—you’re modeling it. 53:02Since 1986 Mr. Vasquez has been the founder of industry changing companies in the United States. A software developer by training, after spending 6 years with AT&T Corporate, Vasquez founded ISAC, a computer consulting firm in 1986. Vasquez wrote the software that automated Ladies Home Journal Magazine in 1987. Until then, the magazine was done on typewriters. Mr. Vasquez merged ISAC into PACE Health Management which developed the first electronic medical record system to go public on NASDAQ that used expert systems and artificial intelligence neural networks to develop clinical pathways that supported clinicians taking patients from admission to discharge. The company was later sold to 3M Healthcare. Mr. Vasquez founded CareMedic Systems – the first real time processing system for hospital Medicare Part A claims. In 2000, the Mayo Clinic Foundation purchased 5% of the company and by 2004, CareMedic software was serving 1,500+ hospitals in America. The company was sold in 2005 to United Healthcare and continues today as a product of Optum. Mr. Vasquez and his wife founded St Gregory Retreat Centers for people suffering from substance abuse. St Gregory developed a proprietary cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program and served 10,000+ addicted patients with 25% of those patients addicted to heroin or prescription painkillers. Unique to St Gregory, Mr. Vasquez worked with research physicians to understand, develop, and deliver an intravenous body chemistry solution to reduce or eliminate cravings for opioids. Delivered to over 2,000 patients by 14,000 treatments with almost no adverse effects, the result was 84% of patients were still alive, sober and working after 48 months. To complement this solution, Mr. Vasquez also developed and built a complex mass-spectrometer laboratory with unique panels that could identify metabolites of opioids as recovering patients required undeniable oversite. The company was sold to a venture capital roll-up, Summit BHC in September 2018. After interviewing hundreds of opiate and heroin addicted patients, Vasquez saw a constant theme where patients had become dependent due to prescriptions provided for acute or chronic pain, primarily orthopedic in nature. In an effort to reduce opioid prescribing, Vasquez founded Harbor View Medical, which provided orthopedic stem cell procedures developed by Regenexx© as a non-invasive alternative for people who were facing orthopedic surgery and potential long-term opioid prescriptions. Mr. Vasquez was successful in getting local self-insured health plans to include coverage for these procedures. Harbor View Medical was merged into Regenexx© in 2017. In January 2018, Opioid Clinical Management, Inc was founded by Mr. Vasquez in response to the dramatic opioid epidemic and the national need for a solution. OPCM has developed proprietary software algorithms (patent pending) and integrated provider management to allow large self-insured employers to identify physicians who are over-prescribing opioids and employees that are struggling from resulting opioid abuse. There are 1,700 employer health plans that use OPCM software. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic, where he also received a Master’s degree in Human Nutrition. He is a board-certified chiropractor, and has a particular interest in mind-body medicine, gut health, and using food as medicine, and has a burning passion for cooking. Dr. Esposito’s goal is to help others achieve this by teaching about the importance of the food we eat, the water we drink, air we breathe, people we build relationships with, and the body’s innate ability to heal. He helps others overcome the fear of symptoms and adopt the mindset of healing. While in school, he dove deeper into anatomy and physiology, understanding how the gut works and the intricate biochemistry that allows our bodies to run like well-oiled machines. 1:02:27Dr. Aditi Nerurkar is a Harvard physician, nationally recognized stress expert, and author of “The 5 Resets: Rewire Your Brain and Body For Less Stress and More.” She is also an in-demand multi-media personality, high profile medical correspondent, internationally renowned Fortune50 speaker, and podcaster. Uniquely fulfilling her original career ambition to be a journalist, Dr. Nerurkar has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Oprah Magazine, Architectural Digest and Elle – in addition to being a columnist for Forbes and writing for The Atlantic. She has made more than 300 appearances as a medical commentator on MSNBC, CNN, NBC, ABC and CBS News; and has spoken at the “Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit” and Harvard Business School Women’s Conference. Dr. Nerurkar also co-hosts the popular and influential “Time Out: A Fair Play Podcast” with New York Times best-selling author Eve Rodsky. Dr. Nerurkar’s first brush with intense media demand came in 2011 – when she was a Research Fellow at Harvard – with the publication of a study she conducted in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) titled: “When Conventional Medical Providers Recommend Unconventional Medicine”; followed by her first interview with Diane Sawyer on World News Tonight, and attention from NPR. Dr. Nerurkar’s expertise on stress comes from working with thousands of patients throughout her years as a primary care physician and director of an integrative medicine program at Harvard’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, from 2012-2020. She is now a lecturer at Harvard Medical School in the Division of Global Health & Social Medicine and serves as the Co-Director of the Clinical Clerkship in Community Engagement. She has also worked in global public health at a World Health Organization collaboration center in Geneva, Switzerland. Though she entered Barnard College at Columbia University with an eye toward studying journalism, Dr. Nerurkar’s family DNA all but dictated a future in medicine. In India, her grandfather was a surgeon and her grandmother, one of only three women in her medical school, was an OB/GYN. She was raised by her grandparents in Mumbai until the age of six while her parents were in the U.S. studying medicine themselves. She then came to the States, where she grew up outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Even as she thrived as a researcher and practicing physician, she developed a love for media and health communication and knew she would eventually use her creative and journalistic talents to facilitate action. Her first published article in The Huffington Post, “Medication or Meditation: Which Should You Choose?” launched this side of her career. During the pandemic, her speaking career took off as a speaker with The Leigh Bureau Speaking Agency. 51:26Welcome back to the Lindsay Elmore show. As you may know, we are taking a couple of weeks off to celebrate the holidays and we would not leave you without an episode for the week. So, what we are doing is we are highlighting some of our top rated podcasts of 2023, as well as circling back to some of the podcasts that maybe weren't chart toppers, but we're some of my very favorite interviews to conduct this year. Today's interview is with Dr. William Lee. Dr. Lee is an internationally renowned physician. His books are New York Times Bestsellers Eat to Beat Disease and Eat to Beat Your Diet. When we eat to beat our diet we are better able to burn fat to heal our metabolism as well as have an extended lifespan. A mutual theme with our different presenters that life is not about a lifespan. It's about a health span. How long are you going to live while staying healthy? That's what we want to talk about. So what a treat it is for me to get to talk to Dr. Lee again about how we can eat to beat your diet. 59:37Welcome back to the Lindsay Elmore show. As you may have heard, we are taking a couple of weeks off to celebrate the holiday and find some time to rest. And there is nobody that understands the need to rest more than my guest today, Katerina Lindgold. Katerina started college at age 14 and holds multiple degrees. She's a graduate of MIT at 23. She was the youngest world aerospace industry executive in the world. And then she collapsed from severe burnout. And this led her to take a look away from satellites and start studying the Function of the human brain. We talk about brain training, burnout and how we can create joy and growth and flexibility in the way that we think. The other thing that I loved most about this interview, Is that we as a society have forgotten how to be bored. We've forgotten how to just sit in peace. And that's what we want to talk about today. The power of stillness and how we can contrast that stillness with neuro sprints where we say, I'm going to work really hard, but then I'm going to rest. How can we become better at finding balance in this overstimulated world. 17:52Welcome to this very special edition of The Lindsey Elmore Show. Do you feel like you've tried everything to lose weight, decrease stress, increase energy, and just feel better? Maybe it’s not your fault. It could be your microbiome. Your microbiome is connected to every single body system as well as your overall physical and mental wellness. Imbalance in the microbiome (dysbiosis) could be the cause of a slew of health issues that may surprise you. Contrary to popular belief, simply popping a probiotic supplement is not enough to support this intricate network that makes up the microbiome. The truth is, if you’re not engineering your microbiome, you’re leaving yourself vulnerable to an imbalance that can negatively affect your physical and mental health. Back in September of 2022, I hosted an event with over 40 experts who shared about the role of the microbiome in overall health and wellness. We are now sharing many of these interviews as a part of a podcast series. We’ll explore the ever-evolving science of the human microbiome and its impact on health. You’ll hear from experts about the latest research and how to apply this in your daily life. If you’ve struggled with health issues and feel like you are out of options, I encourage you to tune in as we investigate the complex interplay between nutrition, lifestyle and the microbiome, and discover new ways to engineer a healthier, happier life. From exploring cutting-edge treatments to learning about the power of probiotics, this special series of The Lindsey Elmore Show podcast is sure to open your eyes to the world of microbial engineering. 47:13Welcome back to the Lindsey Elmore show. We are taking a couple of weeks off to celebrate the holiday season and to take some time to rest as well as encourage rest among our colleagues who are so gracious to come in and give their time to be on the podcast. I'm so excited. My guest that we're highlighting today, I have wanted to interview for a long time, Izabella Wentz. Izabella is a fellow pharmacist who has truly transformed her own life as well as the lives of so many others by helping them to find and treat the root cause of the number one cause of hypothyroidism, which is Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Izabella has been a number one New York Times Best Seller. She has taken her own personal health journey and turned it into life changing opportunities for other people. Other people learn more about themselves, identify the root cause and truly reverse disease instead of just putting a bandaid on it. Her newest book that we're talking about today is all about how stress truly destroys every single function of our body. How being a female on high alert causes not only problems with metabolism and thyroid function, but it can also lead to adrenal fatigue as well as autoimmune conditions. It throws cortisol out of balance and it simply puts us in a state of stress and fight or flight, which can have broad ranging implications. Even with our fertility, our digestion, our immunity, you name it, we're going to talk about how we can go from being these high alert, always on guard females and get out of the body's traditional responses to stress and danger and instead craft a parasympathetic state that can help not just one, but every single body system to heal. 48:46Here at the Lindsey Elmore show, we are taking a couple of weeks off to celebrate all of the holidays and to truly take some time to rest. We are going to be re sharing a couple of the episodes that came to the very top of the chart this year, as well as a few of my favorite interviews that weren't necessarily the most listened to, but the ones that I enjoyed doing the most today's interview is with my pal Kelsey Koehler. She has been practicing nutrition since 2011. She has a bachelor's degree in dietetics and exercise science, as well as a master's in functional medicine and clinical nutrition as a practitioner. She is such an extraordinary example of practicing what you preach. Her brand profit combines personalized nutrition, functional medicine, lab analysis, metabolic dysfunction. She looks at blood chemistry and she also puts it all together in an understandable story that truly delivers a one Stop shop for each individual patient. She and I agree that everybody deserves to be healthy. And my favorite thing about this episode is that we also agree that being healthy is nothing more than a series of mundane, repetitive behaviors day after day after day. 49:45Candace graduated from the University of Utah in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, and in 2012 with a Masters of Social Work. She worked at University of Utah’s Neuropsychiatric Institute as a member of their crisis team and as a therapist on the inpatient psychiatric unit at LDS Hospital. While working at LDS Hospital, she saw excellent results with Ketamine treatment for severe depression, OCD, and suicidal ideation. Realizing she wanted to do deeper work with clients beyond the initial crisis of being in the hospital, she opened her private practice, Therapy Alliance, in 2016. She opened Ketamine Therapy at Therapeutic Alternatives in 2018 with Austin Francom, after seeing great results with her patients who were in ketamine therapy. Candace’s approach to healing is focused on creating a safe space for individuals to heal, as well as empowering patients to create safety inside of themselves. Austin is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). He started his work in health care at Volunteers of America social detox and the University of Utah’s Neuropsychiatric Institute while obtaining undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Sociology. After starting a nursing career, with experience largely in mental health and critical care, he earned a master’s degree in nursing from Westminster College. He has been practicing in the Salt Lake Valley in primary care since 2013. Austin continues to work at UNI as an advanced practice clinician. In 2015, he began working full time in family practice at Summit Primary Care. Together, Austin and Candace began Ketamine Therapy at Therapeutic Alternatives in February 2019. They believed that Ketamine therapy could be safely and effectively administered in a setting that was less clinical and more welcoming. They set out to create a clinic that reflected this belief that inviting and comfortable surroundings could foster a more ideal environment for healing to happen. Each treatment room at Ketamine Therapy at Therapeutic Alternatives is designed with this philosophy in mind. 20:39Welcome to this very special edition of The Lindsey Elmore Show.
