For there is many a small betrayal in the mind, a shrug that lets the fragile sequence break sending with shouts the horrible errors of childhood storming out to play through the broken dike. And as elephants parade holding each elephant's tail, but if one wanders the circus won't find the park, I call it cruel and maybe the root of all cruelty to know what occurs but not recognize the fact. And so I appeal to a voice, to something shadowy, a remote important region in all who talk: though we could fool each other, we should consider— lest the parade of our mutual life get lost in the dark. For it is important that awake people be awake, or a breaking line may discourage them back to sleep; the signals we give — yes or no, or maybe — should be clear: the darkness around us is deep.

Housing is one of the greatest adaptive challenges we currently face as a species. It’s also a key solution to many other complexities around population, community, civic engagement, and the ecological crisis. Navigating our current global political landscape often feels like patching up a sinking ship, where the tools we use to mend it often reproduce the status quo that created the holes in the first place. In terms of housing, this looks like the expansion of repetitive, car-centric suburban developments that damage the earth and force us to spend more time in our cars commuting than in community. Prachi Rampuria and Soham De share another vision for what place making can be — one that calls for the building of a new ship to address today’s challenges with tomorrow’s solutions. They are co-founders of EcoResponsive Environments , an award-winning urban design and architectural practice based in London. “How can I become a good relative?” is the inquiry that guides Hilary Giovale’s work in writing, teaching, and reparative philanthropy. It’s a concept Hilary first became familiar with while building relationships with Indigenous communities; a goal to strive toward where we operate in support of the collective human community and of the Earth. In her book, Becoming a Good Relative: Calling White Settlers toward Truth, Healing, and Repair , she shares with warmth, compassion, and vulnerability her journey as a ninth-generation American settler reckoning with the realities of whiteness; the destructive impact its wreaked on Black and Indigenous communities; and walking the path of healing. This week, Andy and Hilary discuss divesting from whiteness; the humanizing power and spirit of storytelling; the importance of fostering a connection to the land as a foundation of this work; and ways listeners can commit to practicing reparations in our day to day lives. All proceeds of Becoming a Good Relative go to Jubilee Justice and the Decolonizing Wealth Project . "A New National Anthem" by Ada Limón The truth is, I’ve never cared for the National Anthem. If you think about it, it’s not a good song. Too high for most of us with “the rockets red glare” and then there are the bombs. (Always, always, there is war and bombs.) Once, I sang it at homecoming and threw even the tenacious high school band off key. But the song didn’t mean anything, just a call to the field, something to get through before the pummeling of youth. And what of the stanzas we never sing, the third that mentions “no refuge could save the hireling and the slave”? Perhaps, the truth is, every song of this country has an unsung third stanza, something brutal snaking underneath us as we blindly sing the high notes with a beer sloshing in the stands hoping our team wins. Don’t get me wrong, I do like the flag, how it undulates in the wind like water, elemental, and best when it’s humbled, brought to its knees, clung to by someone who has lost everything, when it’s not a weapon, when it flickers, when it folds up so perfectly you can keep it until it’s needed, until you can love it again, until the song in your mouth feels like sustenance, a song where the notes are sung by even the ageless woods, the short-grass plains, the Red River Gorge, the fistful of land left unpoisoned, that song that’s our birthright, that’s sung in silence when it’s too hard to go on, that sounds like someone’s rough fingers weaving into another’s, that sounds like a match being lit in an endless cave, the song that says my bones are your bones, and your bones are my bones, and isn’t that enough? After several years focused on parenting, podcasting, and leadership development work, I'm excited to release my new song Apocalypse on Christmas . I wrote it last winter in the wake of a period of depression and an intense bout with Covid that laid me up for over a month. Writing it helped me heal. It was kicked off by my five-year old daughter's playful attempts to steal my jacket. It turned into a love song for community amidst the fall of civilization :-) You can listen to the full song here on Substack. It’s also available for download on Bandcamp , along with two other wintery songs to warm the heart. Merry Christmas -Andy p.s. the well-read denizens of Substack might be hip to the fact that the word apocalypse - which in our modern era (circa 1980s) came to mean the “end times” of civilization - is rooted in the Greek apokalyptein which means to "uncover, disclose, or reveal," and evolved into the Middle English to mean “insight, vision; hallucination." The song is written in that spirit. What if everything you’ve learned about self-development is actually making things harder for you? What if there was a way to shift from the self-improvement paradigm, which leaves many of us feeling caught in a constant flux of trying to “fix” ourselves, towards one that nourishes our sense of innate wholeness and resourcefulness? For Steve March, a coach of nearly 25 years and founder of Aletheia , this question lies at the heart of his practice. He calls for a shift of attunement from a mindset of self-criticism and a drive to always become a “better” version of ourselves, (which often leaves us feeling as though we’ll never be enough) to a more poetic one of beauty and deep acceptance — a process he calls “ unfoldment. ” In this thoughtful conversation, Steve describes how through this lens of unfoldment, we can release our hyper-focus on our own deficiencies and embrace a more integrated approach to human development; one that allows us to become participants in the natural unfolding of our being. He and Carrie, the award-winning singer and songwriter, have produced a number of stage productions centered around collective healing and reimagining of our democracy. They have co-written songs, turned poetry into music, and hose The Growing Edge podcast - which is a beautiful venue for discovery and growth. This conversation explores the many voices and cultures we’ll need to weave together if we're going to repair and restore the sacred lands we cohabitate, lands that have been desecrated by centuries of violence, theft, extraction, and forced displacement. Through music, poetry, and discussion, we tap into the spirit of possibility that can come if we're willing to show up in our lives and risk ourselves in our status, standing, and safety. Catherine Bell is a successful entrepreneur, business leader, and best-selling author. She is the CEO and founder of The Awakened Company , which focuses on helping organizations foster healthy work cultures through the awakening of the self, relationships, and team dynamics. Her book of the same name is a response to the world-wide crisis of financial instability, and posits that a fundamental reset of the economy calls for a shift in practice where businesses are measured by their state of awareness, and not profitability alone.
