This week, in what might be the funniest episode yet, Molly and Emese are joined by co-stars Amy Schumer and Brianne Howey. They get candid about motherhood, career evolution, and their new film, Kinda Pregnant —which unexpectedly led to Amy’s latest health discovery. Amy opens up about how public criticism led her to uncover her Cushing syndrome diagnosis, what it’s like to navigate comedy and Hollywood as a mom, and the importance of sharing birth stories without shame. Brianne shares how becoming a mother has shifted her perspective on work, how Ginny & Georgia ’s Georgia Miller compares to real-life parenting, and the power of female friendships in the industry. We also go behind the scenes of their new Netflix film, Kinda Pregnant —how Molly first got the script, why Amy and Brianne were drawn to the project, and what it means for women today. Plus, they reflect on their early career struggles, the moment they knew they “made it,” and how motherhood has reshaped their ambitions. From career highs to personal challenges, this episode is raw, funny, and packed with insights. Why isn't everyone allergic to the same things? Why doesn't everyone have the same sense of humour? Why does the same chemical compound cause different downstream physiological effects? All these situations above are related to the concept of 'receptor dependence'. The same stimulus can cause different reactions in different 'receptors', be they transmembrane proteins in the stomach or 'triggers' for sensitive persons with differing levels of 'tolerance' for 'bad jokes'. In naturopathic medicine, we often put greater emphasis on the FOOD while putting less skilful or comprehensive emphasis on the condition of the RECEIVER (cells, receptors, tissues -- the 'tolerance' of the person in terms of the digestive system or neuro-immune reactivity etc.). This is partly because very few people (clinicians) can skilfully assess the abdominal structures and therefore, we don't have a well-known and reliable way to assess the MACRO structures of the abdomen, although we have some fairly well-known concepts (i.e. leaky gut) that inform us of the MICRO structures of the gut. The impact of this disproportional 'blame' on the food rather than the system leads to an emphasis on restrictive and often unsustainable diet plans. Sometimes the food is more of the problem (e.g. gluten in celiac disease); sometimes the system is more to blame (e.g. leaky gut or sphincter of Oddi dysfunction) ... but it is always the interaction of the two that is the problem . Have you ever wondered why some people just keep getting recurring infections that they just can’t seem to get ahead of? Dr. Dave highly recommends that anyone dealing with pancreatic disorders (especially if unrelated to excessive smoking and drinking) have an assessment with a clinician who practices visceral manipulation (as taught by the Barral Institute) so as to have a better STRUCTURAL understanding of clinically relevant anatomy that could be contributing to this 'idiopathic' condition. SIBO is a framework, a perspective, a piece of the puzzle in many cases of gastrointestinal disorders that many proactive and health-savvy patients know quite a bit about. From the integrative clinician's perspective, it sounds very 'science-y', has some clear-cut borders, guidelines etc. for assessment and testing and outcomes, and it sounds (maybe a little overly) simple and clear in these respects. But is it a case of "much ado about .... SIBO"? Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/that-naturopathic-podcast--4229492/support .…

Halitosis, or bad breath, can originate from various sources, primarily driven by volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced by oral bacteria during the putrefaction of food particles. Mouth breathing exacerbates this issue by reducing saliva flow, allowing bacteria to thrive. While oral causes include poor oral hygiene and gum disease, extraoral factors like diet, systemic diseases, and respiratory conditions contribute to the multifaceted origins of halitosis. If you were to compile a “I’m new to Naturopathic Medicine” starter pack, chances are you’d include vitamin D, fibre (or PRE/SYN/PRO/POST-biotics), and marine sourced omega 3 oils. Perhaps you’d agree that the best of the bunch is the #omega-3 rich marine oils? Yes, vitamin D has been the darling of integrative medicine for about 15 years … and yes, a good fibre such as #psyllium can craft an enviable stool and microbiome … but the impact of omega-3 fats on inflammation, cellular and mitochondrial membrane structure, cardiovascular health, cognitive and neurological function, carcinogenesis, metabolic syndrome (and the list could go on and on) is vast, deep, and well researched. The study of these fats is so important and impactful that it has likely changed the way we think about inflammation. So put that dirty canola oil back on the shelf … in the garage, next to the WD40. Post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that can develop in some individuals after recovering from a gastrointestinal infection, such as food poisoning or a bacterial or viral infection. The importance of the patient's pre-existing health or terrain lies in the fact that individuals with a compromised or already sensitive gastrointestinal system may be more susceptible to developing post-infectious IBS. This condition is characterized by persistent digestive symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloating and underscores the need for comprehensive care and monitoring of the patient's digestive health both before and after an infection to prevent and manage such issues effectively. If a patient presents with ‘heat’ or inflammatory symptoms, as well as a suspected infectious origin or contributor to the present condition, we must think of this herb Andrographis paniculata , also known as "King of Bitters," has a rich history in traditional medicine that has been corroborated by more recent scientific investigations into its unequivocal application as an immune-invigorating herb that is most reliably applied to the treatment of ‘heat-related (i.e. inflammation and oxidative stress) respiratory tract infections. Join Dr. Michelle ND as she discusses the importance of biotherapeutic drainage, a naturopathic approach that aims to support the body's natural detoxification pathways. It involves the use of homeopathic remedies and botanical extracts to stimulate the excretion of toxins through the liver, kidneys, and other elimination channels. By promoting the proper functioning of these organs and systems, biotherapeutic drainage can enhance the body's ability to remove metabolic waste and environmental toxins, which must be eliminated in order to function optimally. There is an axiom in Traditional Chinese Medicine that goes a little something like this: ‘Blood is the mother of Qi, and Qi is the commander of Blood’. They are interdependent, each needing the other to support life on a cellular level. Without blood, the nerve will die, and the blood requires the directing and integrating (yang) influence of the nerves to get to and from where it needs to nourish (yin). Glutathione is thus critical for the biochemical function of the Mother and the Commander, and signs of RBC fragility and neuropathy may be good indications that you may benefit from a highly absorbable glutathione supplement, especially if you suffer from any chronic disease associated with oxidative stress. Are you ‘tired and wired’, totally exhausted and running on adrenaline? This very brief episode (about 6 mins) talks about the use of a homeopathic remedy, Argentum nitricum, and is not intended for anyone with fundamentalist beliefs about homeopathy. It is simply the shared experience of one clinician who finds it very helpful for those who are WIRED. You still have to address the TIRED, but you won’t be able to do that if you don’t address the WIRED, too. TIRED + WIRED + ARGENTUM NITRICUM = TIRED. This is a net positive result which will allow you to build up the yin energy a little easier. If you could use only one word to help describe the essence of the stomach, a shortlist would have to include ‘ACID’. And, if the function of the stomach is largely dependent upon the optimum acidity of its contents, and many of you reading this have INSUFFICIENT STOMACH ACID, then why are acid-decreasing medications like proton pump inhibitors some of the most commonly prescribed medications? Sleep is the sweet, sweet, rejuvenative nectar that can make every single chronic disease better. It’s as easy as that. A good night's sleep is healing ... w hich is probably why we all are excited at the prospect of any supplement helping or improving sleep quantity or quality. But is melatonin the cure-all for your sleeping woes? Could it all be so simple? Despite they hype, melatonin doesn’t seem to change sleep architecture greatly, but details matter. The dose, the pharmacokinetics of absorption of different supplements, and the individualization of the prescription may lead us to some conclusion between over-hyped placebo and panacea. A medical diagnosis can be very helpful; a tangible validation of the way a patient is feeling. But what happens when someone begins to have limiting beliefs around their health due to this diagnosis? Conversely, just because there is no diagnosis present in your medial charts, doesn’t mean that you do not need to invest time and energy into your health. A lack of disease is not necessarily a presence of health. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/that-naturopathic-podcast--4229492/support .…

What are normal poops? IBS isn't just BLOATING it is also the other end of the spectrum. We need to know the root causes of IBS because often it is just another "garbage diagnosis" Calling it "IBS" tells us that there's something going on but doesn't say what is functionally wrong with us. IBS is called a "functional" gastrointestinal disorder but it is not one size fits all, everybody's causes and therefore treatment will be different. We wish it were simple but part of what Naturopaths do is listen for the "whispers" that tells us what is going on in the gut. This episode definitely goes into some depth as to what IBS actually is, and gives some great examples of people living with and trying to solve IBS. Including our very own Dr. Michelle. If your fish is sick do you make it wear a mask, or do you change the water? We’re all swimming in a soup of toxic chemicals. The air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the lotions and potions we put on our skin, and the dust under our beds, are contaminated with myriad toxins that can, over time, make us sick. Just because they haven’t been proven to kill us doesn’t mean that they aren’t harming many of us when encountered frequently in our environment, with our endocrine system, babies in bellies, and our kids being particularly vulnerable. It can be easy to ignore, or too overwhelming to change, but we’re approaching the tipping point where our health might not be able to take much more. Enter Emma Rohmann. Our culture and institutions have been overly focused on the masculine, and our approach to medicine is also reflective of this very imbalanced bias towards the masculine. The masculine approach is like this -- fix this precise problem for me, now, then we’re done. It’s compartmentalized, it has an end point, a goal. Success is the achievement of the goal (the symptom is gone). The feminine perspective understands that, in reality, we are constantly changing beings and our healing work is never really done. It is more of a holistic, process-oriented perspective. In reality, we need BOTH. It is this AND that, not this OR that. Join Jessika Marie and her husband Dr. Ben Snider ND as they help us weave a bit more yin into the yang in our discussion on the need to recognize the importance of the Divine Feminine in a more comprehensive and balanced approach to health and medicine. Some people may say that Naturopathic Medicine is “the Medicine of the Future”. But by the same token, Naturopathy is a branch of Medicine that is rooted in observing, cooperating, and adapting to natural phenomena, and Nature’s wisdom is timeless. As such, it is a medicine of the past (and the present), and it is important to remember the roots of Naturopathic Medicine. It is fitting, then, that we were able to have a conversation with Dr. Richard Vuksinic ND, a true student of the timeless phenomena of Nature and one of those “roots-y” Naturopathic Doctors who reminds the rest of us Naturopaths why we do what we do, and why it makes so much sense. Except for his strange infatuation with Doug Gilmour and the Toronto Maple Leafs, it is fairly safe to say that everything Naturopathic Medicine courses through his veins and forms every fibre of his being. Others may not be able to see your pain, but you know just how real it is. It’s all you can think about. We all want an instant solution, so you take your Advil or Tylenol like candy, but it’s only a temporary solution. Whether it leads to an ulcer, elevated liver enzymes or Dr. Google, at some point you realize this is not a long term plan. You’re on fire. You swap the pharmacy for the health food store and get some curcumin; yes, you are less likely to get an ulcer, but what of the incendiary conditions that led to all the pain and inflammation? Meet Dr. Benjamin Snider, ND whose insights into treating these all-consuming symptoms are rooted in his own personal experience with 10/10 pain that he endured as a child which were brushed off as “normal for an active kid”. Dr. Ben is a Naturopath’s Naturopath. With his “simple sophistication” he is able to look at the problem a perspective that is probably very different from what you’re used to. When assessing or treating pain, most of us wouldn’t think water, sunlight, fasting, (or hookworms?) could be part of the picture, but after listening to this episode, you’ll ask, why not? The egg from which you were born was, at one point, developed to a large extent inside your mother’s ovaries while she was still in your grandmother’s uterus. You, your Mom, and her Mom may have been (in some sense) in Vegas together. One in 6 couples has problems with fertility, but they are often told to wait a year and to “just keep trying.” Despite the wonders and borderline miracles in the science of fertility, to say that this is a flawed approach is a serious understatement. Sperm take 3 months to develop. It takes one year for the primordial follicle to develop into the “chosen one” of the eggs. We know that the environment in which these cells develop affects the genes they express, and therefore their health and potential. Shouldn’t we see fertility as a meaningful impetus to “achieve” better, healthier versions of ourselves rather than some stressful, reactive “treatment” for a problem that leads to far too much shame and isolation? Dr. Liz Cheravaty ND thinks so and after over a decade of dedication to better understanding pediatrics and fertility science, she is bursting with wisdom on the subject. Listen with both sides of your brain and your heart as Dr. Liz helps take us beyond outcome-based fertility. Bacteria, viruses, cancer, parasites -- they pose an ever-present threat in our lives; so how does your body protect itself from threats from both the outside and the inside? The immune system. It’s like the police and armed forces of the body. It shields you from invading armies of the outside world (e.g. bacteria and viruses) and protects you when your internal cells go rogue (e.g. cancer). Like everything in the body, it must be kept in some form of balance. If it is weakened, we are obviously going to be more susceptible to various conditions and infections, but what happens when it betrays you? When the police are a bit too heavy-handed? When there is a communication breakdown in the body and we experience “friendly fire” from our armed forces that are supposed to protect us, not hurt us? Almost anything. Showing up as a diverse set of symptoms that vary from person to person and described under the umbrella of “autoimmune disease”, they are quite difficult to treat with an overly simple “take this for that” kind of medicine. This group of diseases, in particular, reminds us of the wisdom of Sir William Osler’s quote, “The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.” Join us on the front lines as Dr. Tanya Lee ND evens the battlefield on this sneaky set of diseases. NOTE: We had a lot of technical issues on this recording (resulting in us interrupting each other quite a lot!). As much as half of the population fear one disease more than any other -- CANCER. The diagnosis alone can be traumatic. During treatment, you've swept away into an all-consuming whirlwind as you try to keep up with all of your appointments, tests, treatments, and specialists. You’re fully engaged in the process and hardly have time to think, let alone think about what happens after your treatment. But what happens after you ring the bell? The whirlwind is gone and you’re flung back out on your own, probably with very little guidance on what to do next. You’re lost in space. Now what? How do you deal with the grief of time lost, the trauma of treatment, the loss of the life you thought you had built, the changes in your body? And what about the fear of recurrence? How do you do everything possible to prevent what happened from happening again? This episode we chat with the Cancer Remission Mission creator Dr. Kristina Cox ND, who is passionate about helping those who are lost in space after the ringing of the bell. Through connection, context, and meaning, Dr. Katrina helps us redefine beliefs and values. It’s an emotionally charged subject, so you won’t want to miss out on this episode as she sheds light on some commonly held (mis)perceptions about cancer that may not be serving us well. Do the demands of tomorrow necessitate a sleeping pill tonight? It’s been a full day, and you’re (insert expletive) tired. You did all of the things; all of the work things, mum things, wife things …. now the kids are finally in bed. Finally, you can swap your beloved coffee for a deserved glass of wine (or a sleepy time tea?) and turn on Netflix to “turn off your brain”. It’s time to sleep, right? So why can’t you? Was it the 5 cups of coffee? Was it because you skipped your workout to have a nap? How about the unintended habit of snacking on quick (not so nourishing) comfort foods “for energy”. Are you dark deprived? Do you need a sleep divorce from your 100 dB snoring partner? And so, the cycle continues. With real sleep solutions to feel and live better, improve your Sleep IQ with Dr. Leigha Saunders, ND as she keeps us fully aroused distilling the science of sleep. You eat food. You break it down. You absorb all the bits you need and poop out the rest, right? Kind of, but not quite. It’s a little more complicated than that because of the trillions of bacteria in your guts. And you know what? They eat what you eat. Like it or not, you and your tiny little roommates are not just living and eating together -- you are dependent on each other -- “you” are actually a superorganism. So, we must accept the fact that bacteria are going to live with us. And, we might as well invite the right ones to the party by offering up an enticing menu. So grab a bag of prunes and join our guest gut geek Dr. Kim Bretz as we discuss the blurry lines between you and the bugs and your food and your poop, Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/that-naturopathic-podcast--4229492/support .…

Whether you’re “sick” or well, if you’re interested in improving your health, you’re likely going to have to change. And change is hard. It takes energy, courage, and vulnerability to make changes to our lives. It’s going to take the right work, the right actions, and practice. Which doesn’t sound like a whole lot of fun. To make it happen we need meaning and purpose. We need support and connection. We need compassion and insight. You don’t need to be told to eat more vegetables and eat less candy. You need to have a safe space where you can gain insight into why you choose candy over kale. Get the tingles with us as Toronto Naturopathic Doctor and Executive Coach Dr. Yashar Khosroshahi (“Dr. K.) hits you in the feels with the inspirational neuroscience that helps connect your “why” to the “what” so that we can change. “Hemoglobin is not enough”. We all want more energy. You may want to run around with your kids, cook more, get up early and go to the gym, start an evening yoga practice, or go for a walk with your friends … Maybe your goals are much more modest and you’re just constantly exhausted; even the day to day “stuff” just seems to be too much. You may have sparks of motivation to make things happen, but without energy, you lack the biochemical fuel to put it into action. And do you know what contributes to EVERGY and MOTIVATION? Iron. Today we talk to Hamilton ON Naturopathic Doctor Justin Gallant, AKA “Iron Man” about a nutrient that changed his life, and there’s a chance it could change yours, too.
