There are hidden dangers in our everyday products. So much so that they are now saturated in our blood. In this episode of SuperLife, I’m joined by Kris Hansen, PhD who helps us dive deep into one of the topics I’m most passionate about: the world of "forever chemicals" or PFAS. We discuss shocking discoveries Kris made during her tenure at 3M, including identifying fluorochemicals in blood samples, the fierce skepticism she faced when revealing her findings, and the significant environmental and health implications of PFAS contamination. We also discuss what’s hiding in our everyday products and the difficulty of challenging corporate narratives. Dr. Kris Hansen is an analytical chemist with a distinguished career spanning academia and industry. She earned her PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder, focusing on environmental chemistry. In 1996, Hansen joined 3M's Environmental Lab, where she played a crucial role in identifying and characterizing PFAS contamination in the environment. Her pioneering work on PFAS has been widely cited, contributing significantly to our understanding of these "forever chemicals." After leaving 3M in 2022, Hansen now applies her expertise to address global chemical contamination issues. BREAKDOWN What we discuss: (00:13) Forever Chemicals and Their Impact (18:27) Navigating Controversy in Chemical Discovery (27:59) Corporate Knowledge of Environmental Contamination (45:51) Reflecting on the Environmental Contamination Journey (50:10) Negative Health Effects of Forever Chemicals (01:08:06) Empowering Future Scientists Through Education LINKS Find more from Darin: Website: https://darinolien.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/Darinolien/ Book: https://darinolien.com/fatal-conveniences-book/ Down to Earth: https://darinolien.com/down-to-earth/ Find more from Kris Hansen, PhD: Website: https://www.savannasci.com/ Don’t forget: You can order now by heading to darinolien.com/fatal-conveniences-book or order now on Amazon.
