Today, I sit down with Vietnam Veteran, Tom Equels, to discuss veteran mental health, horsemanship, and writing.
Mr. Equels took all of the above and created The Horseman's Tale, a fictional book following the story of a lonely and bitter Vietnam Veteran, Jake, who realizes that Camp Lejeune damaged and even killed his wife and children. In order to deal with this, Jake decides to utilize written exposure therapy (W.E.T.) to deal with his emotions and P.T.S.D. It's through Jake's journaling that Mr. Equels delivers the story, which contains several lessons.
These lessons include the relationship between people and horses, military mental health, anger, relationships, young adulthood, mentorship, flawed characters, and much more.
In all, we cover Mr. Equels life and backstory, the creation of the book, the point of the plot, analyze plot points and themes, and discuss military mental health, writing, and horsemanship. Additionally, Mr. Equels shares with us a painting he did for a Cathedral, discussing faith and foundational traits with me.
