In the South, food and music go hand in hand. They define much of what we think of as Southern culture, and they say a lot about our past, our present, and our future. Each week, Sid Evans, Editor in Chief of Southern Living, sits down with musicians, chefs, and other Southern icons to hear the stories of how they grew up, what inspires them, and why they feel connected to the region. Through honest conversations, Sid explores childhood memories, the family meals they still think about, and the intersection of food and music in their lives. Always surprising, always engaging, Biscuits & Jam is a celebration of the South—and the people who are moving it forward every day. New episodes every Tuesday.

It’s more precious than diamonds. More valuable than gold. It can take a lifetime to earn…and seconds to lose. And when it comes to leadership—in business and life—it’s more important than money, time, or any other resource in the world. We’re talking about trust. What can you learn fromthe career of a bamboo farmer? Why must leaders in any field—from sports to business to public office and even growing a family—develop the power of patience? Anyone can lose their temper. Anyone can throw their weight around. And anyone can allow their ego, anger and lack of self-control to go unchecked and be used as a way to illicit a response from others. And unfortunately, that response can be mistaken for leadership…which it is not. Far from it. But it takes a strong and disciplined person to remain in their power; to feel the frustration and let it pass. And just like a muscle, patience takes time and practice to develop. Join JT for an in-depth discussion on how to develop (and grow) your patience as a leader. In this episode, we explore: - Why it is imperative to stop comparing your results to others (and obsessing over where you “should be by now”) - Two questions you must ask in order to get past momentary frustration - How practicing patience daily can bring huge benefits (and affect your results) - What happens when you feel frustration…and let it flow through you like a river - How to channel your frustrations into jet fuel for progress - Why you should note improvement…and even regression..of your patience practice - and more… And be sure to get complimentary access JT’s 52-week strategy course, The Weekly Momentum Shift™ at www.FlyWithJT.com today Fly High. Motivation is overrated. In fact, people who rely on motivation memes/videos/soundbites in order to “get started” usually find themselves trapped in a never-ending loop of chasing a dopamine rush instead of pursuing their mission. Look at any high-performer and you’ll likely see someone who has an internal drive, and an inner “spark” that keeps them moving through any challenge; one that stays hot long after the rush of inspiration wears off. What is it about these people who can find a way to get themselves going every day, regardless of the situation or how they feel? Are they special? Are they born that way? Do they possess something everyone else lacks? Or can this “spark” be developed? Join JT for a deep dive on how self-starters develop—and maintain—the drive for excellence. In this episode, we explore: - Why all leaders, entrepreneurs and influencers MUST be self-starters - Why the “hard start” is the key to setting the tone to a high-impact day…and life - How high-performers become stronger through adversity (and how you can too) - The myth of “ready” and how it stifles progress, creativity and results - What the “early bird” knows (and what it ignores) and how to benefit from the same mindset - The fallacy of willpower, why elite performers ignore it and what they develop instead - and more… And be sure to get complimentary access JT’s 52-week strategy course, The Weekly Momentum Shift™ at www.FlyWithJT.com today Fly High. By now, it should come as little surprise that top performers in any field rely upon and follow the guidance of great coaches. From athletes to executives and entrepreneurs, the greats rely on the counsel and wisdom of coaches to elevate their game. With that said, it pays to take a buyer-beware approach to hiring a coach. And if you identify as a coach, you owe it to those who place their trust in you to live and breathe a certain ethos that goes above and beyond just delivering “results”. It seems like everyone is a “coach” these days. And with the proliferation of online certification programs, anyone with a few thousand bucks can almost instantly buy the title of Coach. But there is a key and important aspect that is missing with these types of programs: they fail to teach leadership. And while the connection of leadership to coaching is misunderstood (especially in the age of quick-and-ready coaching certification programs), the fact of the matter is in order to be a great coach, a person must be a strong leader. Period. Join JT for a deep-dive conversation on 8 key traits that world-class coaches share. One of the most significant (if not misunderstood) mindsets a leader can implement is a mindset of abundance. Abundance…interesting concept but what does it truly mean? While many “Thought leaders”, gurus, “coaches” profess the message of abundance, few live by it. It may seem like a weird combination—like bacon-infused ice cream, or Mariachi heavy metal music (more awesome than you might think)—but perhaps the greatest one-two punch in high-performance leadership is the combination of confidence and humility. And they work together even better than you might imagine. On the surface, it may sound strange, and perhaps that is because of the age-old misconceptions about the two virtues. On one hand, confidence is often misinterpreted as ego or arrogance, but nothing could be further from the truth. And on the other, being humble is sometimes confused for being meek or subservient. Again…lightyears from accurate. So how do these two traits work together? And how can they be used to elevate your leadership and performance in business and life? Let’s face it, there is tons of hype around the notion of “going big” toward goals, or “playing bigger” in life. And don’t forget the ever-present “hustle” drivel that seems to be the hot topic of achievement and better performance. And all of that is great. Except, if it doesn’t work for you. There’s a new(er) movement—the anti-hustle movement—that opines that the whole “Go Big Or Go Home” philosophy is somehow wrong, or at the very least, near-sighted. What if they have a point? We need to talk. There is a huge problem plaguing society today, and it has quietly crept into how we do business, how we compete on the field of play and even how we treat the people closest to us. The sad reality is that it is showing up on the biggest stages of life and, in turn, becoming more and more prevalent and acceptable in every area of society. The problem is so few people listen and strive to understand, while so many have resorted to shouting and flexing their egos in a way to enforce their will on the world around them. This is a Leadership challenge, and this episode of The High-Altitude Mentorship Show™ is call to action to all Leaders who have the courage and the will to stand up and step forward. In this episode, we discuss: - Why dropping our own agendas (and egos) is a critical first step to quieting the noise and discord we are drowning in - How admitting that we don’t “know everything” is more difficult than it seems, and more powerful than we realize - Why seeking understanding doesn’t mean agreeing or changing your view - The truth about your views (and how they may be hurting your way of life) - An important 2-word question that will change the way we communicate with each other - The ONE thing we must commit to right now if we are to collaborate and move forward…together - And more… And be sure to download your complimentary copy of JT’s award-winning book, Flight Plan To Success™ at http://www.FlyWithJT.com Fly High. Recently I had the privilege of interviewing two young rockstars who set some big goals and CRUSHED them in the most unconventional ways. They faced a lot of the same challenges we all face on the climb to achieve our dreams, but these two—ages 8 and 11—shattered those barriers and hit their targets and won a big competition in the process. They did what it took, and stretched their comfort zones furhter than most adults ever would. I shared the interview in this episode of The High-Altitude Mentorship Show™, and here are a few takeaways to listen for: - What happens when you set bigger goals…and take massive action to achieve them - How to deal with negative people who want to derail your dreams - The power of persistence and followthrough…and who it can pay BIG dividends - Why success is a team sport (and who you should have on your team) - When to execute on the BIG tasks…(especially on a compressed timeframe) - Why systems, scripts and procedures are great…but they are no substitute for action - and more By the way, one thing that got left out of the interview was the followup these two did when delivering the final product. They included hand-written thank you notes, personally addressed to each person. And they also raised extra money through donations…simply by asking politely, directly and with a smile. I hope you enjoy this interview as mush as we enjoyed bridging it to you. Fly High. Fly Fast. Fly Far. ~JT…

Without question, every High-Performer knows success is a team sport. And in order to achieve the milestones and hit the targets they’ve set for themselves and their organizations, they MUST surround themselves with strong teams. People with a hunger to win and determination to conquer any obstacle that comes up. But it takes more than bravado and big talk. It takes having a keen eye and and penetrating understanding of what a strong, high-performing team needs. And that is what today’s episode of The High-Altitude Mentorship Show is all about. In this episode, we take a page out of the John C maxwell book of Leadership to introduce the conversation on developing high-performing teams. We discuss: - How to find the right team embers based on more than just role and ability, but heart and capacity - Why “personality conflicts” can be acceptable (and resolved permanently) by attitude - The role passion plays in accomplishing the mission - Why character is more important than pedigree and past performance - the importance of teamwork (and how to cultivate it) - and more Be sure to download your complimentary copy of JT’s award-winning book, Flight Plan To Success™ at www.FlyWithJT.com. 15 years ago…September 7, 2001 was an incredible day for me. It was the day I realized my lifelong dream of becoming a US Naval Aviator…and dream most people in my life—including the US Navy—told me I’d never achieve. Years of hard work, persevering through setback after heart-wrenching setback and dogged determination led up to the amazing moment when the Commodore pinned my Wings of Gold to my chest and welcomed me to the fraternity of Naval Aviation Mission accomplished. There is much more to this story than a man who realized a childhood dream. There are lessons I feel responsible to share; lessons that may serve you in your biggest missions in business, career and life. In this episode of The High-Altitude Mentorship Show™ I share 7 insights I gleaned from pursuing—and accomplishing—my lifelong dream. Specifically, we discuss: - The power and importance of finding YOUR mission…and accomplishing it - The truth about the hard (but satisfying) work involved in following your purpose - Why the accomplishment is less valuable than what you BECOME as a result of going after it - Why it is a GOOD thing when people doubt you (…and how to deal with it) - What you MUST have in place to conquer your own doubt (especially about yourself) - Why “it takes a village” to raise a success story (and how to find yours) - Why the end result you get is perfect for you (even if it’s different than you planned) - What you MUST prepare for once you achieve your dream (VERY important) This is one of my favorite episodes. My hope is that as you listen, you’ll learn at least one thing you can implement to make your lifelong dream a reality. Fly High. Fly Fast. Fly Far. ~JT…
Greatness isn’t a birthright. You don’t have to be born a certain way, or under specific circumstances in order to become “great”. Greatness is a choice. And just like success, it is something we each define for ourselves in our own way. But mastery…now THAT is a different story. Mastery, like greatness, is a choice. However, mastery is also the culmination of years of focused (hard) work and discipline of doing your best each and every day. It’s the daily habit of awesome. Join JT for a discussion on what it takes to formulate and execute the daily habit of awesome in your life. In this episode, we go deep on: - The “right” way to start your day (and what to avoid at all costs) - The 3-step process for setting your day up for success before you ever step out the door - How to practice “temperance” in your daily actions (and how it affects performance) - Why (and how) to insulate yourself from toxicity (and one specific area you MUST) - The powerful act you should finish your day with everyday (!) - and more. Achieving a high level of success is alluring. It’s sexy. It appeals to the driven and competitive cross-section of society who thrive on challenge and seek to refine their personal excellence. Even more enticing than high levels of success is sustained excellence; the bench mark of high-performance. But what happens when the pursuit of excellence backfires? What happens when sustained effort leads to flatlining results? The results can be devastating to the psyche of the high-achiever, and have lasting effects on future performance. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as “The High-Achiever Curse” and it can wreak havoc on the efforts of even most talented people in the world. Even YOU. So how can we move past it? Join JT for an in-depth conversation on the go-to strategies top-performers rely upon to get back on track to the top their game. In this episode, we go deep on: - How perception is NOT reality (and believing so may be crushing your results) - The real reason asking for help is a true sign of STRENGTH (…not weakness) - Why the weird (but powerful) “SKS test” can shift your momentum instantly - How admitting your fears, concerns and insecurities (in moderation) can boost performance - A simple (yet powerful) “forecasting” technique can repel the damaging effects of disappointment and failure…permanently - and more… And be sure to grab your complimentary download of JT’s award-winning book, Flight Plan To Success™ at http://www.FlyWithJT.com today. Greatness, like a fine wine, requires time to cultivate and refine. It doesn’t happen overnight, and in most cases, it comes as the byproduct of a passage through the gauntlet of challenge, risk, sacrifice and commitment. And this applies to virtually any field of endeavor: athletics, business, music, art…it even applies to discovering our passions in life. But sadly, the seduction of the promise of overnight success that seems to run rampant in our society, can trip up even the most focused and driven achiever. Instead, it should be approached as a process, if not a project, to develop and refine our own greatness. Join JT for an in-depth conversation on what it takes to cultivate the best in yourself…and others. We’ll discuss: - The power and importance of chasing YOUR vision (instead of someone else’s) - Why “playing the dumps and dives” can be a necessary rite of passage to excellence - How recognizing and appreciating your own talent trumps the acknowledgement from others - Why “ready” is a myth (and how you are likely more ready than you think) - Why hammering your craft every day is so crucial to paving the way to greatness - The power of humility (and how it can accelerate your performance) - and much more… Tune in and get ready to launch your own greatness project. There is a faceless, silent assassin that efficiently and relentlessly attacks success and results. And it especially affects Leaders, athletes, entrepreneurs and High-Performers of all types. So what is this slayer of success? It goes by the name of Imposter Syndrome, a phenomenon that afflicts High-Achievers, rendering them unable to internalize and accept their own accomplishments due to the relentless fear of being exposed as a “fraud”, begin unqualified…and a host of other crippling feelings that not only hamper success, but affect the quality of life of the achiever. All of this is, of course, not only unfounded but also self-manufactured by the achiever. But why? And how can it be stopped? Join JT for a discussion about a very real and intense condition that affects High-Achievers in every field of endeavor. You will learn: - The typical symptoms of that hide in the recesses of the mind…and how to avert them - Why assessing what you’ve accomplished can derail Impostor Syndrome before it gets rolling - How understanding your progress is important to maximizing your results - When comparing yourself to others is the most catastrophic to your performance - Why “feelings are false” (and why you should block them out at the point of execution) - and more… If you have ever felt “in over your head” but want to rise to the challenge of Leadership and excellence, this one if for you. Study any elite performer in any field—sports, music, business, leadership—and one can easy think that there must be something different, or “special” about them. Are they blessed with extraordinary gifts and talents that everyone else lacks? Are they “chosen” for greatness? Or…is it something else? What makes the difference between a world-class performer and someone who toils along, barely breaking past average, is not just talent, skill, resources or luck. It comes down to specific, disciplined actions done with consistency and purpose. Listen in as JT discusses 7 disciplines of high-performers that set them apart from the field. Among the topics discussed are: - Why goal-setting is antiquated and ineffective, and what works BETTER - How visualization is greatly misunderstood (and how the best of the best do it) - The truth about how your focus is either boosting or killing your results - Why always “going flat-out” is an amateur mistake (and how the pros avoid it) - A powerful question that puts your “future self” in the driver seat NOW - When (and when not to) listen to the voices in your head - 3 things you should account for every night before going to bed - and more… Discover how to implement these 7 Disciplines into your life and watch your performance (and results) explode. You can learn a lot about success and excellence, and what it takes to achieve both, by studying and observing elite organizations and individuals. And that was one of the great privileges I took from my 8+ years as a Naval Aviator. Whether your mission is business, sports, the arts or anything else that drives your soul, learning from and understanding how the best of the best operate can shed light on how we can to best elevate our game and perform at our highest levels in life. Join JT for a discussion on how five High-Performance traits of Naval Aviators—and other elite performers—can transfer over directly to elevate your efforts. Some key points to focus in on: - The relationship between humility and ego (and why you need a measure of both) - Why it’s not enough to just know what you do; it’s crucial to know how to BEST do it - How amateurs handle pressure (and what the pros do instead) - What competition really means (and why we need it in society) - Who to hold accountable during tough times (and times of victory) - and more… And be sure to get your complimentary copy of JT’s award-winning book, Flight Plan To Success™ at http://FlyWithJT.com Fly High.
