This was so profound that she combined her passion for interior design with her charitable heart to join Savvy Giving By Design , a non-profit whose mission is to provide comfort, support, and healing to families with a child facing a medical crisis by transforming the interior spaces of their homes at no cost to them. Tara’s first design project was a room for 11-year-old Meg, who lives with brittle bone disease. Meg says “it's basically when your bones are really fragile and you can't do things that you would typically think of someone doing.” Meg and her mom, Leslie, join us to talk about the transformation of Meg's bedroom that she wanted to be “somewhere she could come after a long day to calm down and just take a break.” Meg surprises us all by singing her little heart out to "Fight Song." At the age of 16, Fernando Murillo was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes. After serving 20 years, he was transferred to California Medical Facility (CMF), a prison that focuses on caring for the elderly and terminally ill, among others. It was there that he first stepped foot into CMF’s hospice unit, the first of its kind in a prison setting. Initially, Fernando was hesitant to join the peer pastoral care team, but once he committed, the work became transformational. He witnessed the immense gratitude of his dying friends within the community and, at the same time, began to heal and reveal parts of himself that he had never known. In this inspiring episode, we take a look at how Fernando and others are on a mission to train more incarcerated residents to administer end-of-life palliative care. Kimi and Erica discuss last week's episode with death doula Diane Button , which they can't stop thinking about! Both confess to having an endless fascination (ok, borderline obsession) with the wisdom and knowledge that people share when they know the end is near. Diane's message is more about living well than dying well. Her dying clients are called "the wisdom keepers" and she shares their greatest joys and regrets. Simple moments bring joy – the quiet of the morning, conversations at the kitchen table, dog snuggles. The most precious moments in our lives will be found (and remembered) in the simplest of things. Slow down or "pause" as she says to breathe in this one life you've got. What you do every day, how you behave, and how you interact with others will ultimately define how you are remembered. Treating everyone with kindness and respect is a sure path to being remembered and honored for all the good you created during your time on earth. Meyli Chapin was trapped in a hotel room for 17 hours in Nairobi while Al-Shabaab terrorists attacked the property. She was alone and certain she was going to die. But through the incredible efforts of brave men who fought to recover Meyli and extract her to safety, she survived. However, after the attack, PTSD left her mind shattered. She felt like a fraction of the strong, confident, capable woman she used to be. She thought she was uniquely traumatized and couldn't understand why she was unable to leave her apartment, why she couldn't sleep, and why she wished she had died in the terrorist attack. It was a long, hard road, but eventually Meyli did find the light at the end of the tunnel. She shares her experience of healing from PTSD, as well as thoughts and strategies to help anyone suffering from trauma to find hope and relief. In All The Wiser, we use human stories to challenge us to think differently about the world, and to learn about different perspectives, voices, and messages. In order to prevent mass shootings, it is imperative to understand all the factors that lead to them. This fall, I had the privilege of talking to two moms who lost their sons in very different ways to school shootings. One of them was Sue Klebold, mother of Dylan Klebold, one of Columbine's two shooters. The second was Scarlett Lewis, the mother of Jesse Lewis, who was killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook. Both women loved their sons and dedicated their lives to ending mass shootings. It is my hope that today in re-airing Sue's episode and encouraging you to also listen to Scarlett's story , we can think deeply about how little boys grow up to become young men who commit mass murders. Let's learn from them so we can all decide what role we will play in ending the heartbreak in our country. Maya Amoils had a very romantic mid-20's experience living and working abroad, running half-marathons and building the career of her dreams. That all changed after receiving a phone call that altered the course of her life. At 28, she was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer. The day before Maya came to do this interview, she completed her 15th round of chemo. She is fighting for her life and throughout her twisted and beautiful journey has discovered a lot about what matters most during our time here on earth. In this raw, vulnerable and beautiful conversation, Maya shares the ways we can show up for people when they need it the most, find compassion for ourselves during times of change, and create more moments of awe and wonder every chance we get. Erin Khar has relapsed so many times she can't even count. Her pill habit started at eight years old. Then at 13, a boyfriend introduced her to heroin. She hid her drug use from everyone while maintaining a full middle-class prep school lifestyle that included cheerleading, volleyball and horseback riding. By 21, she was using several hundred dollars a day worth of heroin and crack. Erin never imagined that 17 years later she would be clean and sober, a mom of two kids, an author and advice columnist.
