On episode 30 of "What's Mine is Yours" with Tiffany Woys, Tiffany sits down to a 90- minute conversation with a powerful and ultra personally revealing, superstar songwriter, Tom Douglas. Tom is Nashville songwriting royalty, and his life and stories are astounding and enlightening. Tiffany’s questions are piercing and personal, revealing a very complex, extremely self aware artist who still hangs on to his self described "naive hope" for the songwriter.
He talks about being “ a faithless” man yet he quotes and thanks God profusely.
He talks about never writing with artists, yet he is open to it, and he talks about never giving up. He said, “You can’t give up on something you love.”
The truth is, Douglas gave up. After his songwriting career failed to take off in the late 80’s during his first move to Nashville, Douglas relocated with his wife to Texas, where he had a successful 13-year career in commercial real estate. At age 39, he realized something was missing. While he was certain he never wanted to return to Nashville, or have one of his songs recorded, Douglas wanted to enjoy writing songs again.
A deeply personal song Douglas wrote about his father, “Little Rock” was recorded by Collin Raye in 1994 and was nominated for CMA Song of the Year. It was Douglas’ first song recorded at age 41, and three years later he moved back to Nashville. His No. 1 streak continued with Miranda Lambert’s GRAMMY Award-winning, “The House That Built Me,” Tim McGraw’s “Southern Voice,” and Lady A’s, “I Run to You.”
“I had to come back to that. The creative journey in life is a battle of detaching yourself from the end result. … Hemingway said, ‘Write one true sentence,’ and that's really what I'm trying to do."
