Elton John ist in den 70er Jahren der erfolgreichste Solokünstler der Popmusik. Alle Alben verkaufen sich millionenfach, seine Konzerte in Stadien sind ausverkauft.
Und doch erschöpft sich seine Arbeitsweise, persönliche Probleme mit Drogen und Beziehungen belasten ihn, die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Texter Bernie Taupin wird unterbrochen, Ausflüge in Discomusik Ende der 70er Jahre gefallen vielen seiner Fans nicht.
Mit dem Album „Too low for zero” und den Hits „I´m still standing“ und „I guess, that´s why they call it the Blues” kommt die Anerkennung vieler Kritiker und der Fans zurück. „Nikita“ und "Sacrifice“ sind weitere Hits der 80er Jahre.
Elton John braucht noch bis 1990, um seine Suchtprobleme in den Griff zu bekommen. Konsequent setzt er sich danach für Freunde mit ähnlichen Problemen ein, auch die AIDS-Hilfe hat mit ihm einen aktiven Helfer und großzügigen Spender. Musikalisch geht er neue Wege und komponiert Filmmusiken und Musicals. Bei der Trauerfeier für Prinzessin Diana spielt er 1997 seine Single „Candle in the wind“ zu ihren Ehren. Es wird das meistverkaufte Lied der Musikgeschichte.
In den folgenden Jahren arbeitet er mit sehr unterschiedlichen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern zusammen, von Eminem bis zur Boygroup „Blue“, von den „Scissor Sisters“ bis hin zu einem seiner Idole, dem beinahe vergessenen amerikanischen Pianisten Leon Russell.
Nach weiteren Alben bis heute geht Elton John mittlerweile auf eine mehrjährige, weltweite Abschiedstournee.
