A conversation spurred by what a 15-year-old kid from near Jackson Mississippi said off the cuff, barely thinking about it at all.
I suppose I'm not supposed to say it. Since none of us supposedly have working enough brains to understand empathy across population groups just because our pigment might be different.
But that doesn't usually stop me.
Of course I add the apologetic caveat upon caveat of context about many people I absolutely admire exceedingly, and try to put myself in their shoes.
But I nonetheless get to the point.
How is it than a 15-year-old can imagine that if not for something that distracts him slightly he would be "committing violence or shooting or killing"???
HOW does that EASILY flow from a kid's mouth of any ethnicity???
Let alone that it could be that if you heard it you can make a pretty accurate guess on ethnicity?
Yet that IS where we are over 15 years after the Obama inauguration.
Imagine how many individual lives would be different and better by many degrees if this mindset was changed significantly.
======================================
0:00 Intro / Background on my tendencies on this.
1:29 . . . Navy boot camp. An important lesson.
3:57 Main: Odd interpretation of what 15-year-olds do near Jackson if they don't get to flip burgers.
3:59 . . . Background
5:58 . . . Now he said WHAT now??
"I felt like it was a good thing [working at Burger King], because we could have really been out doing violence, or shooting, or killing. But we went out and worked."
7:07 I mean, yeah... I guess.
7:33 But... the mindset!
8:11 This HAUNTS some of the best people in every community in America. How frustrating!
11:24 Root Causes? Self-fulfilling from many different factors?
14:40 Always on the edge of disaster.
16:10 Clinton / Jackson crime stats. Capital police to help out, as in Jackson, the capital, has a homicide rate that is 14 times the national average. 30,000 calls for service per month.
19:11 False ending. :-D (this happens sometimes)
21:50 My heartfelt desire regarding this topic - how incredible could it be if this happened?!!! And what clear other improvements must've come along with that.
(at about 22:03 I said "minority black Americans" when I meant new immigrant black Americans)
