In this episode, Aprille Janes shares her aha moment when she realized that even though she had a successful consultancy business, there was an incongruency between her life and who she wanted to be. She shares her journey from that moment, more than eight years ago, to where she is today. Highlights Aprille Janes knew she wanted to change, and because she had learned to trust herself, thought that she could figure out her next move. It often takes until your 60s or 70s to begin to trust yourself on that level. She explains. The brains of young people today are wired differently from when we were young because they’ve learned that if something isn’t working, you can try something else. At some point, she realized that when the voice inside was telling her she couldn’t do something, that was a rule she had made up and she could change the rule. If you don’t like what you’re doing, look at the things that do fit you and consider that that may be a path that you need to be on. Also, look at the things that you don’t want to be doing. Aprille didn’t have to know the end result of what she was creating, she only needed to know the next step. Aprille shares that as a child she was always drawn to the arts and loved to sketch. There was a moment that she describes when she just knew she wanted to be an artist. When you are looking to reinvent yourself, it’s important to look back and ask who did I used to want to be. When you know that something you’ve created isn’t quite right, keep going. Marketing has taught us that it’s not good to be less-than-perfect. Don’t be afraid to take your time as you reinvent yourself. It’s a very rich experience. Many artists believe that you can’t make money as an artist, yet Aprille has a thriving business. We discuss the typical artist mindset and what has to change. Aprille talks about the skills that artists need to make a living, and is more complicated than most people realize. Sales are really about creating relationships. To make a living doing what you love to do, you have to understand the marketplace. Don’t try to get advice from people who have an interest in your not changing. Links Aprille Janes on Instagram Check out her wonderful paintings and other images.
