Along with his twin brother Steve and climbing partner Jim Gile, the trio has arguably the greatest ski mountaineering resume in the history of high-altitude skiing with dozens of first ski descents including being the first Americans to ski one of the world’s 14 highest 8,000-meter/26,300-foot peaks, and the first Americans to ski the north ridge of Everest among others. He climbs “pure-style” without the use of supplemental oxygen, porters, or drugs placing him among the most elite mountaineers in history. He was inducted into the Explorer’s Club in 2001 and In 2017, Mike and Steve were inducted into the USA Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame.
