Carbonado, a Cascade foothills industrial coalmining town on the Carbon River below Mount Rainier in eastern Pierce County, thrived for decades. Timber, salmon fishing, and mining blossomed in Puget Sound as people arrived in the second half of the nineteenth century. Mining corporations established villages around coal mines in eastern King and Pierce counties.
Carbonado was one of the largest and longest-lived company towns of the 1860s and early 1900s. Carbonado's story coincides with regional rapid development, labor tensions, catastrophic accidents, and inter-ethnic fights.
Listen now to learn more about the fascinating history of this Pierce County town!
