September 25, 1957...Racial segregation was ruled unconstitional in 1954, but many schools did not implement integration for years after. Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas made national news when the governor called in the Arkansas National Guard to prevent 9 black students from attending. It was 3 weeks into the school year before the Little Rock Nine were allowed to attend classes. They spent the remainder of the school year being harassed and bullied by their white classmates and the public.
