The 1715 Treasure Fleet, or the Plate Fleet as it is often called, Plata being Spanish for silver, was a collection of twelve ships that set sail from Cuba to Spain in 1715. They carried an unimaginable amount of treasure and were a continuation of a long tradition of Spain shipping treasure from the Americas back home. Unfortunately, the fleet set sail during hurricane season and eleven of the twelve ships crashed off the coast of Florida. Millions of dollars worth of treasure sunk into the ocean or washed up on Florida beaches, changing history for the Spanish empire in what is one of the biggest peacetime maritime disasters ever.
