The next chapter in the Jewels series, Shaykh Fadhlalla discusses another of the short meccan Surah’s at – Tin ‘The Fig’. The early short meccan surah’s are condensed snap shots of the multi layers of reality. This Surah places focus on natural patterns and rhythums. Using the metaphor and symbol of the ancient fruits: the fig and the olive that were staple part of the diet of people of the ancient near east. The metaphor of the ancient trees and our connection with them utilizes an accessible example of the human condition in this temporary zone. Life is a nursery in which in which we improve on things in order to practice returning to the garden. Part of the earthly program human beings are able to add a bit more to nature, as we derive sustenance. Shaykh Fadhllala indicates how this surah highlights key aspects of the map of life. Human beings have been created with the best of potential, in this transitory stage experience is subject to duality. We all seek resolution regarding trials, change and what is the meaning behind it and the way to sustainable joy – all human beings desire joy and lasting goodness. The key theme in this surah is continuity – the cyclical propagation and provision brought to human beings in the prophetic beings and development of the evolution of the essential message and way of life – we are here as a preliminary step in order to perfect adoration and worship of the source of life. That mysterious essence permeates all known and unknown realities and dwells within the heart of man.
