Almost 7 out of 10 Australian consumers recognise the WELS label, seen on taps, showers, flow controllers, toilets, urinals, dishwashers and washing machines. One glance and consumers can quickly tell how water efficient that product is.

Starting off as a water management program, WELS is now an Australian Government mandatory regulatory scheme. This protects water as a resource and also promotes confidence in consumers when purchasing products for their homes or projects.

Teresa McMaugh, manager of the WELS scheme, joins Joe and Laurence in this episode of The Specification to discuss how the scheme affects consumers, the built industry and the unique role the government plays in this sector.

To learn more or get in touch with WELS, you can visit www.waterrating.gov.au

For any questions or suggestions please contact Joe and Laurence at hello@nwmedia.au.

Post-recording corrections:

  • 09:23 The star range for toilets extends to 6 stars rather than 5.
  • 30:54 The total Court penalty was $2.195 million rather than $1.6 million.
