Hello, Reds and Blues fans! We have made it through a fairly boring international break, but it did bring closure to one issue for the USMNT. The focus returns to the EPL this weekend. Let’s see what has happened and what we can expect.
Chelsea’s season has begun in fits and starts. An unfortunate early-season match-up with City, a fairly easy draw for UEFA Conference League Qualifying (which they ultimately limped through), a big win, and a sluggish draw. They travel to the south coast this weekend to face an unpredictable Bournemouth, and then travel across London for a derby with West Ham the next. They will need to begin building some momentum if they are to fend off accusations of showing little progress thus far.
United’s woes have been even worse. They looked sluggish but ultimately got the job done against Fulham, left themselves exposed and vulnerable in their loss to Brighton, and then were humbled by Liverpool in front of their home fans. They’ve been given an ostensibly easier job this weekend away to Southampton, but further slip-ups could begin to bring heat on an already weary Erik ten Hag.
The USMNT should have probably skipped the international break. Interim coach Mikey Varas had his work cut out for him against an amped up Canada – who took the game to the US – and then a softball against New Zealand. Both matches demonstrated just how much work new coach Mauricio Pochettino has to do in order to get this battered group ready for 2026.
The USWNT and the women’s game in general lost an icon this week when Alex Morgan decided to hang up her boots. Her impact on and off the field will resonate for generations. We salute Alex and her multiple trophies across all competitions, as well as her tireless work advocating for others in the game who didn’t have her voice or platform.
