Conscious Decision-Making
- When we were young we didn’t have choice for our foods, and we have developed our taste buds to this as children.
What is the “Gut Microbiome”?
- Bacteria that lines the gut
- “Second Brain” the gut is connected to the brain through the Vagus Nerve
What is “Leaky Gut”?
- breaking down of the single cell layer of our gut lining
- bacteria meant to be excreted through urine and feces seeps into the blood stream
- Causes inflammation in the body and irritates gut lining
What causes Leaky Gut?
- Alcohol
- Gluten
- Diary
- Anything that could be an allergen to someone, which triggers an autoimmune reaction.
Allergy vs. Sensitivity
- A sensitivity may not show up for a number of days.
- Example: Eyes and nose running, loose bowel movements, bloating.
- An allergy shows up within minutes or hours
SIBO
- Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth: bacteria moves into small intestine and releases methane and hydrogen
- Food poisoning is a precursor to SIBO
- A bad diet can cause SIBO; bad bacteria overtakes good bacteria and overgrows
- A surgery can cause SIBO
- Antibiotic use can cause SIBO
- Low levels of HCL in stomach can cause SIBO
- Symptoms: IBS symptoms, constipation or diarrhea.
Heartburn
- Happens when we don’t have ENOUGH HCL acid in our stomach
- Taking Tums and Proton-Pump Inhibitors reduce the HCL
- A certain level of HCL is needed to keep sphincter muscle in the throat closed
Elimination Diets
- An anti-inflammatory diet, run this diet for 30 days
- Start reintroducing foods using a diary. Adding foods one at a time to see which ones bother you
- Important to have community when undertaking an elimination diet
Label Literacy
- Learn to read labels
- Look for sugar and bad oils
