WARNING: MENTION OF DEATH AND SUICIDE, please consult a mental health specialist before listening to this episode if you suffer with any mental illnesses.
I took a week at the end of July to volunteer my time with Experience Camps, a nonprofit organization that sends kids who have lost a parent, sibling, or primary caregiver to a one-week free overnight camp. This episode is to bring to light my experience as a counselor at Experience Camps, my reason behind volunteering, how you can get involved, and what grief looks like as you age. Justin was the director on the boys side and first invited me to apply to be counselor, so I brought him back on to ask me about how this week went for me!
Key Takeaways:
- The different types of activities that are included in this kind of camp
- Unexpected realizations I had about my own grief and loss
- What Experience Camps is, represents, and offers
- The importance of vulnerability, acceptance, and finding your community
