Sugaray Rayford on New Album Human Decency and Tributes to Bill Withers & Little Feat
Manage episode 438460236 series 3457789
Sugaray Rayford joins Kyle Meredith to talk about his album Human Decency. The Grammy-nominated blues titan discusses his growing up in severe poverty in Texas before making his way to California and finding his voice in R&B and Blues (and meeting a pre-famous Vanilla Ice), as well as how his time in the Marines influenced his style of social justice lyrics, while also taking a page from Prince’s book about how to distill all of it into upbeat party music. Rayford goes on to dig into the backstory behind songs like “Failing Upwards” and the sexy sway of “Hanky Panky,” and also tells us about his contributions to upcoming tribute albums for Bill Withers and Little Feat’s Lowell George.
