Title: “David’s Great Life”

Text: 1 Samuel 13:14

Theme: God can give us a life worth living. He can make our lives Great.

Interlude: “14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee.” – Acts 13:14

Introduction:

• King David was one of the greatest men in History. He was God’s choice for a king. He was a born leader, very mature, and beloved (his names meaning). He was a prophet, He wrote 73 of the 150 Psalms. He was a King, for 40 years. 7 Years for Judah and 33 years in Jerusalem.
• David also had a dark side.
  • Uzzah – 2 Sam 6:1-9
    • Field of Abinadab, Kirjath-jearim
    • During the time of Samuel, the Phillistines captured the Ark. They became very superstitious and sent it back on a cart to the Field of Abinadab. (8 miles west of Jerusalem)
    • Transporting the Ark to Jerusalem (the new capital)
    • David had a passion and a love for God
    • He wanted to bring the Ark back to Israel and put it in it’s Capital
    • He did it his way – v.2
    • The result was catastrophic – v.8
    • Compare vs.5 to vs. 8
    • God had specific instructions on how to move the Ark
      • Ex 25:14,15; Joshua 3:3,4
      • Was constructed with rings on the four corners. Staves were put through the rings and the Ark was carried on the shoulders of the Levites.
    • David did things his way
  • Bathsheba (2 Sam 11)
    • Adulterer – 2 Sam 11:1-8
    • Liar – 2 Sam 11: 13-15
    • Murderer 2 Sam 11: 16-18
    • The child conceived died
  • Absalom (2 Sam 13)
    • Incest, rape, and murder (2 Sam 13:14-29)
      • Amnon, raped his sister Tamar (focus on vs. 21-22)
      • Absalom revenged her by killing his own brother (23-30)
    • Rebellion – Absalom led a rebellion against his own Father in order to take his throne.
    • Lost a son – Battle of Ephraim (David told his men not to harm Absalom, but Joab would slay him) 18:9,10,13-16
  • The Plague ( 2 Sam 24:1-4,10,15) David’s census of the people
    • David put his faith in statistics instead of God

The Bible is very clear, the only person to have never sinned was the Lord Jesus. The only one. However, there are some it’s hard to find fault with them (Daniel, Joseph, Timothy, Ruth, John the Baptist) “all have sinned”

Abraham and Isaac both lied; Rachel (Jacob’s wife) Lot and his sin with Sodom, how Moses murdered a man; Peter’s denial, the Disciples that forsook Jesus; Jonah’s disobedience… there were commandments that we find that different people God used broken. Not picking on David but he pretty much broke all the commandments.

James 2:10 KJV: For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

David had a dark side. One thing we can say about David is he was a great sinner. But another thing we can say about David is that he was an even better repenter. (Psalm 51)

51 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

David was a man after God’s own heart who God blessed with a Great Life. Let’s look at a few things in the life of David:

Outline:

1. He was a Shepherd: This shows that he was Dependable
   • Saul failed as a king, Samuel is instructed to go to the House of Jesse to anoint one of his sons
   • 1 Samuel 16:7 7But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
   • God rejects the first 7 sons of Jesse, but then sends Samuel to find David in the sheep pasture to be anointed.
   • Being a Shepherd shows that David was Dependable in His Walk with God
   • Cared and protected for the flock.

(Who are the people God has given us today to take care of? Family; Widows & Orphans; The Poor; Edify our brothers and sisters in Christ; spread the Gospel)

1. He was a Songwriter: This shows that he was a Devout man
   • King Saul was troubled by an evil spirit and the music of David would comfort him
   • David’s talent as a musician gave him fame in Israel and was also commanded by Saul to play for him
   • Being a Songwriter showed that David was Deep in His Walk with God
   • He had an intimate relationship with God. He was very personal

138 I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.3 In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.4 All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord, when they hear the words of thy mouth.5 Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord: for great is the glory of the Lord.6 Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.8 The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.

• If Someone were to ask you right now what your walk with Jesus is like what would you tell them?
• There are a lot of Christians who can talk about Church; Politics; Themselves; famous preacher; Religion; even common Bible knowledge. But what about your walk with God?
• The more we trust God, the more intimate we are with Him
• “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse yourhands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.” – James 4:8
• Devout - Yielding a solemn and reverential attention to Godin religious exercises, particularly in prayer.
• Psalm 1 (David) a life of Holiness is summed up in Psalm 1:1-3

• He was a Soldier: This shows that he was Determined
  • Very bloody battles “Great Slaughter”
  • Invaded the land of the Geshurites, Gezrites, and the Amalekites
  • Destroys the Amalekites to avenge what they did in Ziklag (Amalekites invaded Ziklag, burned it with fire, took women and children captive)
  • Attacks the Jebusites in the city of Jebus, renames it Jerusalem and makes it His capital.
  • Victory over the Ammonites and Syrians

David was a man of War!

He was also a man who was constantly being sought after and betrayed… There was always conflict

• Saul was impulsive and Jealous and wanted David killed
  • Attempts to kill David numerous times
    • Falsely promises his daughter in attempt to kill him; Javelin
    • David escapes another attempt by being lowered through his own bedroom window; David spares Saul’s life twice, once in a cave another on a hillside
  • His own son Absalom sought after him

David was always in a fight it seemed. Rather if it was Warfare, Betrayal, things that were brought on him because he was Godly, and then things he brought upon himself because at the time he sinned and made a mistake. But one thing you can say about David, David was determined.

1 Sam 17:29 “Is there not a cause?” A man after God’s own heart.

Conclusion: David’s Great Life

1. He was a Shepherd: This shows that he was Dependable
2. He was a Songwriter: This shows that he was a Devout man

• He was a Soldier: This shows that he was Determined

“the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart” God can make your life Great!
