This week we’re back with another appearance from one of the show’s most polarizing figures, but this time, she’s not the issue. No, Barbra actually brings some nuance and care to this movie, but the problem is the actual movie itself, or rather, the novel it’s based on. There’s a whole lot that has to be unpacked in this story, and much of it more thoughtfully and carefully than anyone involved really had time for. It’s not hard to see why this movie was a hit, for sure, but Barbra’s wearing too many hats, and even an all-time great performance from Nick Nolte can’t save this movie from sinking under the weight of all its trauma voyeurism and horrible ethics.
