Dave joins the host Anna Redmond to discuss Dave’s view on security administration and share what companies should be looking for when hiring security professionals.

• A lot of security companies will promise all sorts of different things, so you have to be able to look past the pitch and do your research on the company. Make sure to take advantage of your network for honest feedback as they will tell you who you should interview and talk to.
• Security companies aren’t just another vendor. If you want to have a good working relationship with them and have everything run smoothly, then it’s important to make sure you are on the same page from when the contract is signed to when you are giving post orders.
• Post orders are essentially directives that guards or officers in the field are given that will tell them their activities and schedules for the day. If you aren’t providing the guards with the specific things they need to do, then nothing you are paying for will get done.
• When working with a security staff, there needs to be clear communication about if the security guards and officers will need to be trained in house or not. This will help to clear up any confusion and make sure that everyone knows what to do in certain situations.
• Security officers or guards should make sure that they are always being polite and respectful when dealing with other people. You can have that in your post orders that even if someone is on your property that the officer or guard should be respectful.
• Police officers are far better trained than your average security guard or officer, so there is a risk of liability when hiring a guard or officer. The solution to this is by making it clear that their job is to observe and report and not interfere unless absolutely necessary.
• OSHA’s General Duty Clause essentially states that all organizations need to protect their employees from any known hazards.
