A week ago, I was sent an invite on Facebook to check out a friend’s band at Hoss’ Deli in Newport News. Typically these requests go ignored, because of the over flow of cover artists in this area. Unless the band is ‘Me First and the Gimme Gimmes’, (I am not sure that they are together anymore) the likelihood I will leave my house to listen to music I barely want to hear on the radio is really low. There are few bands that I will relent and venture out of my comfortable cave to support. Simply because these groups defy the musical norm of this area by nurturing an artistic vision and ::gasp:: creating ORIGINAL & high quality sounds. Destination Zion is a great example of a group that is working aggressively to break down barriers placed by local venues that pressure many, otherwise, talented musicians to play top 40 and Pop music standards.Needless to say, when I received my invite I felt compelled to leave my cave and support local artistry! My experience last Thursday at Hoss’ Deli was nothing short of remarkable.

Admittedly, when I initially walked in the bar I was disappointed by the lack of turnout. The soulful and energetic performance given by Destination Zion showed that they were not deterred by the sparse crowd. The fans out that night obviously appreciated that effort because there was rarely a moment when the dance floor was empty. As for myself, I swiftly let go of the feeling of disappointment and gave way to the positive vibrations. It wasn’t too long before I found myself entranced and floating down gentle waves of sound on a musical river.

The history of the unity, love and respect between the band members was made clear through the cohesive evolution of the sound throughout the night. I found it very interesting that one member, Micheal Harvey, would play one of four different instruments throughout the sets. A time he would play two separate instruments in a song! I had the opportunity to speak with Destination Zion’s members; Jeremy Nardozzi, Matt Crim, Micah Fox and Micheal Harvey after the show. The sound clip linked to this article is the conversation we had last Thursday night. Topics vary from their history, their sound, the importance of being I-Ree.
