The legend which started in Ukraine talks about the story of a family of children and their mother who wanted to decorate a Christmas tree. On Christmas morning the children woke their mother up to look at the tree. At some point during the night spiders used their webs to decorate the tree. As the sun rays touched the tree the webs turned into silver and gold. The story goes that from that day forward the family never wanted for anything. In this week's episode Sandra talks about the history of vampires. Today's culture knows vampires from franchises like Twilight or old stories like Dracula. However the idea of vampires has been around for hundreds of years. Vampires have been featured in cultures all over the world, although the most common type of vampire is the vampire featured in the Eastern European world. Then, Danielle discusses Edgar Allan Poe's mysterious death. Poe was in the midst of a tour to gain money for a literary magazine publication. While in Baltimore he was found lying in a gutter in a semi-conscious and delirious state. Poe was found wearing ill-fitting clothes and wasn't able to explain what happened to him. He was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment but died days later. Many people who are Poe followers aka Poe-heads disagree about the cause of Poe's death. Many theories have circulated from, the impacts of alcoholism to Poe getting drugged and abused in an illegal voting scheme. At the time of his death, Poe was a well-known figure in literary circles and beyond which could have made him vulnerable to different schemes or attacks. In this episode Sandra talks about the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail is a hiking trail located on the East Coast that spans over fourteen states and is 2,200 miles. Today the trail is well known for being a famous hiking trail and it is estimated that over 3,000 people try to hike the trail every year. The Appalachian Trail was first proposed by Benton MacKaye in 1921 and then completed in 1937. Today, the trail also has paranormal entities including Big Foot and even the Mothman. Listen as Sandra gives a detailed history of the Appalachian Trail and shares two Reddit stories of creepy experiences that people have had. Then, Danielle covers Christine Paolilla and the Clear Lake Massacre. Christine who suffered from alopecia was used to getting bullied by her peers for most of her life. Hello! In this episode, Danielle discusses the Radium Girls. We go back to the 1920s in the United States. The world is reeling from World War I jobs are a hot commodity and factory jobs are more important than ever. Radium, a chemical recently discovered by Marie Curie was considered a miracle cure to aid in cancer treatment. In addition, radium was also used in household products like toothpaste, clock faces, and watch dials. So when jobs in radium factories boomed women jumped at the chance to earn a steady income. Young women in particular were needed in factories to paint watch faces using radium. Radium was used because the chemical properties made anything it came in contact with glow. This includes the numbers on the watch faces, but it also left a powdery residue on the girls' hair and clothes. They were unaware of any potential negative health effects combined with their employers' complete dispellment of radium being harmful. Unfortunately, this was not the case, and quickly women started getting sicker and sicker. Find out what happens to the radium girls. Then, Sandra talks about the Sallie house located in Atchinson Kansas. Known as the most haunted house in the United States, the Sallie house was built at the turn of the century and housed a doctor who lived in Atchinson. Today it is not inhabited by anyone but guests can visit during the day and can stay the night. Due to it;s violent history to stay or even visit the house guests need to sign a waiver. The hauntings include electric batteries draining, moving objects, and even unexplained scratches and bruises appearing during and after guests' visits. In this week's episode, Sandra talks about the superstition of whistling. Although many people today enjoy the act of whistling, in many cultures it is seen as both negative. For instance, in the UK there is a superstitious belief in the "seven whistlers" which are seven mysterious birds or spirits who call out to foretell death. In Native American cultures the act of whistling was believed to have supernatural powers such as to summon spirits or to invoke protection from evil forces. Then, Danielle covers the Kidnapping of Denise Huskins. Denise Huskins' kidnapping was recently discussed in a recent episode of Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy as well as American Nightmare on Netflix. Denise's kidnapping was a unique one not only because she lived to tell her story, but due to the significant public backlash she received. Compared to the novel and film Gone Girl, Denise and her boyfriend, Aaron were accused of fabricating the entire ordeal. But, sometimes life is stranger than fiction. On December 15, 2017, Barry and Honey Sherman were discovered dead, hanging from the railing of their indoor pool. Initially, it was believed to be a murder-suicide, but the circumstances of the death scene raised many concerns for investigators. As the Toronto-based couple was well-known and affluent, many people had a motive to harm Barry. Furthermore, the injuries sustained by both Barry and Honey were unexplainable and pointed towards a murder scene rather than a suicide. Will the killer or killers ever get caught? Then, Sandra talks about the Lincoln Park Zoo located in Chicago Illinois. The zoo opened in 1868 and the first two animal residents were two white swans that the zoo received from New York's Central Park. It turns out that the zoo was actually built on the site of what was formerly known as the Chicago City Cemetery. Due to it being built on a cemetery, the zoo has a few ghostly spirits that also look at the animals. These spirits include apparitions of people dressed in Victorian-styled clothing and there is one particular patron that is most commonly seen in the lion's exhibit. In this week's episode Sandra talks about Ireland's well known tragic love story of Diarmuid and Grainne. The story goes that Grainne was set to marry Fionn McCool and instead ran off with a man by the name of Diarmuid. Fionn was not too pleased and set off after the young couple. After months of being on the run Diarmuid is attacked by a boar when Fionn runs into the couple and refuses his aid to help Diarmuid. However, due to the persistence of one of his sons Fionn decides to help but it is too late. The legend today has been compared to that of Sir Lancelot and Guineviere. Then, Danielle discusses the mysterious death of rising Hollywood starlet, Thelma Todd. She appeared in over a hundred films and shorts. Known for her comedic prowess the "ice cream blonde" had a bright future ahead of her. When her body was found in her car in the garage of her casual love interest, Roland West, Hollywood was shocked. Thelma's death was initially declared a suicide, but a lot of red flags popped up when investigators started looking into her family, friends and business associates.
