In this episode, I had a highly pragmatic conversation with David Jernigan, delving into the pressing challenges facing today's youth, particularly mental health issues and the impacts of technology. David shared his insightful perspective on AI, highlighting its potential as a promising educational tool while also emphasizing the need to be aware of its limitations.
We explored the importance of fostering a culture of excellence in education, striking a balance between high standards and nurturing support. David emphasized the critical role of having dedicated and passionate educators, underscoring the necessity for increased investment in education, particularly in teacher compensation. Interestingly, he discussed his reservations about merit-based pay for teachers, advocating instead for a more holistic approach to rewarding educators.
David also opened up about his leadership journey, offering invaluable advice for young leaders on how to pursue excellence without burning out themselves or their teams. He stressed the importance of finding a balance and maintaining sustainability in leadership roles.

With 20+ years in youth development, he's served as Deputy Superintendent for Atlanta Public Schools, Executive Director for KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools, and Founding Principal of KIPP WAYS. David holds a teaching certification from Georgia State, a Master's in Educational Administration from National Louis University, and is a Morehead Scholar from UNC Kenan Flagler Business School. He's involved in Leadership Atlanta and serves on boards including KIPP Metro Atlanta and Hands on Atlanta.
