This fictional depiction of the Little Women March family’s patriarch won a Pulitzer Prize. It follows Mr. March (based on Louisa May Alcott’s father Bronson Alcott) as he leaves his family in Concord and joins the Union to fight against the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Geraldine Brooks lives near a Civil War battlefield and was inspired to write the book after she found an antique Union soldier’s belt buckle in her yard. She also mentions Thoreau and Emerson, who were both friends of Bronson Alcott’s in real life. This is a heavier, darker read than I normally recommend here on this positive podcast, but that’s exactly the sort of literary book I turn to on cold autumn and winter nights.
