Fight to keep the lights on!
Thank you for calling GIH where we instigate growth one call at a time where we utilize antiquated technology to deliver 3-minute leadership lessons every week day! This is message #158 and I am Aaron Havens.
Remember the movie “Field of Dreams”?
In the 1989 movie starring Kevin Costner, the main character hears a voice that tells him to build a baseball stadium, and then spirits of deceased baseball players come to play in the stadium. The movie ends with a row of cars approaching the new business.
At one point in my life I was part of starting an organization that had weekly rhythms. Putting the work in to form the organization, build the website, set up the leadership structure, hire, market… on and on and on… was pretty stress free. I mean we were just in the building mode, which has a good amount of pressure… but nothing like the pressure of actually DOING what we set out to do. Once this project launched, we would been initiating a relentless pace of “producing a good product” every seven days. That’s when the true work would begin. That’s when responsibility would set in. And oh boy responsibility is a heavyweight! To build it, yeah thats hard. To keep the lights on thats so difficult. Maintaining can be exhausting.
Build it and they will come.
Keep the lights on, consistently and they will return.
Jumping in and making a splash isn’t as hard as swimming a marathon.
My friends, what do you want to start? Where do you want to be in 1, 3, 5 years? Is what you’re dreaming about doable, realistic, measurable for the long haul? Can you keep up the same SOP and KPI and reports and pace for the long haul? If so, you’ve got something great! If not, maybe it’s time to pause, assess and change course if need be. Your work, your goals, your hobbies, the way you spend your calories… Responsibility is a heavy load. Today may be a good day to re-evaluate and double down where you know you can “keep the lights on”.
Thanks for calling in today. Tune in tomorrow for a fresh new topic. At the sound of the beep, is your pace healthy and sustainable? Is there anything you know you need to re-evaluate? I’d love to hear you process this one!
