He was a carpenter and a devout Christian who became increasingly frustrated with the restrictions placed on free Blacks in the city. In 1822, he was accused of planning a major slave revolt. Although the revolt never took place, Vesey and 34 other Black men were tried and executed for their alleged involvement.
