Domestic abuse is an unfortunate reality for far too many people. Many people will flee a bad situation with no real plan for the future beyond surviving. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and today we speak with Angela, a survivor, and Patti Slaughter, the Founder and Executive Director of The Bernie House.
This is a heartbreaking episode, and if there is one thing you need to take away from it, it is the fact that 4 out of 10 women have been a victim of domestic violence. Take a moment and think about that.
Named for Patti's father and his legacy of caring, The Bernie House (or houses) is a place for families to live in a true home while they get back on track. Victims of domestic violence will typically flee their situation after seven incidents, but shelters are only a temporary solution. The Bernie House is what comes next!
During their stay, resources for education, employment, and life skills are made available. At the end of their stay, all the contents of their home are left with them. Truly, this is an amazing organization that defines the phrase "small but mighty." Unfortunately, the need is greater than the resources. The Bernie House is working on a third home, and Angela is working with the State Legislature to make domestic violence a crime--currently, it is not!
Today's story is of one powerful woman who escaped with her daughter and another powerful one who is helping her out!
Have a listen!
