“Recent research in graphic statics, the flow of forces (as expressed in the work of Gaudi), has inspired us to explore the dream of 3D printing using renewable wood cellulose." - Dr. Carolina Manrique Hoyos
This episode of DesignIDEATE reveals a new industry disruptor, 3D printing utilizing the emerging development of a renewable print media: nanofibrillated cellulose. Dr. Carolina Manrique Hoyos at the University of Idaho reviews her inspiration and formative NSF funded research. Renewable resources are yet underutilized or wasted in construction. Buildings emit more than one-third of greenhouse gases globally and lumber efficiency nets at 40%. The challenge and the search is on for bio-based materials to be created for the Advanced Housing Manufacturing Industry of the Future. Dr. Manrique Hoyos is undertaking this research in a consortium with other University of Idaho and Auburn University researchers and professors.
