Trauma, Hope, and Resilience: Newyorican Girl Julia Torres Barden on Our Lives with Shannon Fisher
Manage episode 314317572 series 3164754
Shannon welcomes award-winning journalist, Hispanic leader, gubernatorial appointee, and PTSD survivor Julia Torres Barden to the show to discuss the recently published updated version of her memoir, Newyorican Girl: Surviving my Spanglish Life. A Puerto Rican girl from the South Bronx, Julia navigated a series of traumatic events during childhood that shaped her outlook on the world. After traveling to NYC for business on 9/11 and getting stuck on the island of Manhattan amid the aftermath of the fall of the Twin Towers, it wasn't long before all the trauma she'd experienced compounded into panic and led her to a diagnosis of PTSD. Her memoir serves as a reminder to all who have experienced trauma that there is hope in the darkness.
Our Lives with Shannon Fisher explores personal, political, and societal perspectives of the American experience. The show delves deeply into the worlds of writers, artists, celebrities, and community leaders and offers listeners food for thought about the world in which they live.
