STORY 1: Artists Sought to Pint Murals in Woodstock’s New Parking Deck

Visit Woodstock GA is seeking artists or artist teams to create murals for the new downtown parking deck as part of the Woodstock City Center project. The six-level deck will feature four murals at designated elevator bay locations (A3, A5, B1, and B2). Each mural will incorporate a base color provided by the organization into its design. Murals at A3 and A5 have a $6,000 budget each, while those at B1 and B2 have a $7,000 budget each. Interested artists must submit proposals by July 19 to be considered. Finalists will develop concepts by August 30, with installation planned for November to December.

STORY 2: Woodstock Photographer Elected to Professional Photographers of America Council

Armetrice Cabine, a professional photographer from Woodstock, has been elected to serve on the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) Council for the 2024 – 2027 term. PPA is a global nonprofit association with over 35,000 members, where council representatives like Cabine advocate for photographers' interests and participate in governance decisions. STORY 3: Construction of Holly Springs City Hall to Start in Spring 2025

The city of Holly Springs is progressing towards constructing its new city hall, with construction slated to commence in spring 2025. Recently, the Holly Springs City Council unanimously approved an agreement with Molnar Jordan and Associates, Inc. for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design services for the new city hall. This agreement will update the MEP design to align with architectural plans, allowing the city to issue bids by late fall. The total projected cost for the new city hall is $12 million, funded through Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax revenues. The bidding process is expected to conclude by December, with construction anticipated to begin following a notice to proceed in spring 2025.

STORY 4: Nonprofit Presents Scholarships to Cherokee County Student Athletes

Building Fires, a local nonprofit, awarded $2,500 scholarships to Cherokee County graduating seniors recently. Addie English received the Brandon English Memorial Scholarship to study exercise science at Samford University. Garrett Smith received the Jamie Horton Memorial Scholarship to pursue sports management and coaching at Tusculum University. The scholarships aim to support careers in physical education, health, wellness, coaching, or special education. Building Fires also initiated the Athletic Excellence Honor Cord program at Cherokee High School, recognizing 82 seniors who earned varsity letters and maintained a 3.0 GPA. Chris Asbridge played a pivotal role in River Ridge High School's soccer success, contributing both on and off the field. Asbridge, named Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year and Cherokee County Player of the Year, led his team to two state title appearances and three region championships. He scored 13 goals and provided 9 assists during the season, showcasing his offensive prowess. Asbridge's leadership extended beyond soccer, as he participated in student-athlete leadership, volunteered in elementary school literacy programs, coached youth soccer, and engaged in community service through his church. STORY 6: Canton Resident Promoted to GBI Supervisory Criminal Intelligence Analyst

Kase Gibbs, a Canton resident, has been promoted to Supervisory Criminal Intelligence Analyst at the Georgia Information Sharing and Analysis Center (GISAC) Watchdesk within the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). He will oversee the staff responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating tips and leads on criminal activity affecting Georgia. The Watchdesk operates around the clock, handling over 12,000 requests annually from law enforcement agencies nationwide. Gibbs joined GBI in 2018, initially focusing on the Sex Offender Registry Review Board before moving to the GISAC Watchdesk and later to a regional investigative office. With degrees in criminal justice and sociology from the University of Georgia, Gibbs is recognized for his professionalism and leadership, crucial qualities for his new role in safeguarding Georgia's citizens.

STORY 7: Boys Soccer Coach of the Year: Thomas Leads River Ridge to Championship

Phil Thomas, head coach of River Ridge boys soccer, has been named Cherokee County Boys Soccer Coach of the Year after guiding the Knights to the Class AAAAAA state championship with a 3-0 victory over Sprayberry. River Ridge finished the season 21-1 overall and 6-0 in Region 6AAAAAA. Despite early adversity in the championship game with a red card to their starting goalkeeper, Gracen VanGilder, freshman Everrett Bendik stepped up. Nolan McLure, Gustavo Almeida, and Kingston Courts scored goals securing the title. Thomas praised his team's composure and preparation, highlighting their defensive strength with 11 shutouts and an impressive offensive record of 84 goals scored versus 14 allowed throughout the season.
