Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 60 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Saturday morning 31 August 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is a cool 20 degrees Celsius at 5am!
In Rugby Union: With a Test under their belt already, Manu Samoa was match fit and better organised in taking on Ikale Tahi at Apia Park, Samoa yesterday; walking away with an easy 43-17 win.
Now the men from the Kingdom of Tonga must reset for the Fiji Water Flying Fijians, who will no doubt take their game to another level, after they comfortably dispatched the Manu in the first round of the Pacific Nations Cup in Suva last weekend.
In Rugby League: Recalled after a fortnight in NSW Cup, Flying Fijian Sunia Turuva scored two tries in three minutes for the Panthers - back in the winner’s circle, having locked in a Top 4 spot after a 34-12 win over the Rabbitohs - stewed at BlueBet Stadium last night.
While it was the Rabbits sixth-straight loss, there was something to smile about — and that was 19-year-old Tyrone Munro, who showed maturity beyond his years, in an impressive performance, scoring two tries 48 hours after his mum passed away.
In SportsBiz: ESPN announced yesterday that they have signed a new 12-year deal with the United States Tennis Association to be the exclusive American broadcaster of the US Open through 2037.
The agreement is estimated by “The Athletic” to be worth US$2.04Billion over the entire term, averaging US$170Million annually.
In the NFL: Despite his three NFL Super Bowl rings showing who is the best in the business, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is being left in the dust by his younger rivals off the field.
Mahomes is on a breathtaking 10-year deal with the Chiefs worth US$450million, which made him the highest paid player in the NFL when he signed the contract four years ago.
But the market has changed some, and record-breaking contracts are continually making headlines. So much so, that there are now – not one or two - but 12 quarterbacks who earn more per year than Mahomes.
In Football: The financial rewards in the expanded UEFA Champions League 2024 are greater than ever before, with the total cash prize pot rising by about 25 percent to US$2.8Billion.
And the winners will pocket over US$95Million.
At the US Tennis Open: In one of the biggest upsets of all time – reigning Roland Garros and Wimbledon Champion, Carlos Alcaraz winner here at the US Open in 2022, is out in the 2nd round to Botic Van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands 6-1, 7-5, 6-4.
Carlos was poor, but Botic was absolutely unreal for 2 hours and 20 minutes, leaving his fans in shock.
And that’s a wrap peeps!
