Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 72 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Thursday morning 11 September 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is mostly cloudy and a muggy 23 degrees Celsius at 5am, with an expected high of 26!
In Rugby Union: Former Scotland rugby Captain and star fullback, Stuart Hogg is facing stalking charges against a second woman ahead of a trial into domestic abuse charges against his ex-wife.
Hogg appeared in Court on Tuesday, where he was charged with new offences of causing fear and alarm, by "repeatedly" telephoning a woman and sending her messages of an "alarming and distressing" nature, despite being urged not to contact her.
Hogg also faces two new breach of bail offences over seven years between 2017 and 2024, where he is accused of shouting, swearing and acting aggressively towards his ex-wife, and of repeatedly accusing her of infidelity.
Unbelievable!
In Rugby League: Our world famous tips for the NRL Finals this weekend: In the First Elimination Final, we tip the North Queensland Cowboys to nuke the Newcastle Knights in Townsville, and in the Second Elimination Final, the Bulldogs to “outfoxx” Manly on Sunday at 4:05pm at Accor Stadium.
“Outfoxx” – got it?
In Football: There is a growing rift between Chelsea’s American co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital - the majority shareholder, with each trying to buy out the other’s share and take full control of the Club.
The two sides worked together to acquire the club for a record US$5Billion just two years ago.
Meanwhile, Chelsea keep losing.
In the NFL: Despite the blowout win for Dallas that was largely devoid of any on-field drama, the high profile debut of new Fox Sports lead NFL analyst, Tom Brady boosted viewership on Fox Sports for the Cowboys-Browns game to 23.8 million average, up 46% from the comparable game to open last season, and was the network’s most-watched Week 1 game since 2020.
And in the WNBA: The WNBA’s regular season was the most-watched in history across all ESPN platforms, with an average of 1.2 million viewers per game.
That number is a 170% increase versus the average viewership of last season’s games, with the 2023 WNBA Finals averaging less than 800,000 viewers over four games.
My goodness – Caitlyn Clark!
Finally, in SportsBiz: ESPN’s biggest name is nine months away from free agency. “They’ve made an offer; I’ve countered,” Stephen A Smith said. “And that’s where we’ve left it.”
At US$12M a year, ESPN’s top dog has been eclipsed in pay by NFL personalities Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, and Pat McAfee, who each make US$15M or more.
Smith said. “When you’ve been No. 1 for 12 years, well, what the hell does that warrant?”
As everyone knows, “First Take” generates 10 times more revenue now compared to when Smith started hosting the show in 2012.
ESPN bosses have repeatedly said they want Smith to remain at the network.
“If somebody wants you bad enough, they show you. It’s not always about the money,” Smith said.
No way Smiffy . . it’s always about the money!
And that’s a wrap peeps!
