Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 29 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Sunday morning 05 May 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.
In rugby union: Argentina missed out on the chance to be crowned SVNS League Winners 2024 yesterday as they lost 5-21 to Ireland in their HSBC Singapore 7s quarter-final.
Los Pumas 7s have been the standout men’s side this season, winning in Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver, but their form has dropped of late in Los Angeles, Hong Kong and now at the Singapore 7s.
After two good wins against Great Britain and Brazil on Day One, Team Fijiana were absolutely hammered 60 zip by Australia in their last pool game yesterday - OUCH.
Thankfully, the Fiji girls lifted to beat Japan 10-12 in their Quarterfinal and play New Zealand in a semifinal later today.
After two losses on Day One to USA and Great Britain, the Fiji Men’s 7s team bounced back to record a good win over Ireland 19-26 in their final pool game.
They beat Canada 7-31 as they try to win 9th place.
Meanwhile, Samoa lost badly 45 zip to Spain, after earlier losses against France and South Africa.
Samoa lost to Spain again 19-12 in their 9th place semifinal.
In Super Netball: The Melbourne Mavericks delivered an against-the-odds inaugural win and handed the early premiership favourites, Sunshine Coast Lightning, their third consecutive loss 64-65, with a last-second goal securing the win.
Meanwhile, the Adelaide Thunderbirds showed no mercy handing Giants Netball a 49-69 thrashing, their fourth from as many games. This leaves the Giants as the only team in Super Netb
all Australia yet to notch a win.
In rugby league: In an entertaining and sometimes controversial clash at Cbus Super Stadium, the Gold Coast Titans fought back from 6-20 down to level the scores at 20 in the 55th minute.
A Nick Meaney penalty goal in the 68th minute proved the difference in the end, with the Storm holding off the Titans to escape with a seventh win, 23-20.
In football: Now in League One – two tiers down from the Premier League, the Racecourse Ground where Wrexham plays its home games, is adding seats.
First going up from about 12,000 to 16,000, and then much, much more, working from stand to stand, to eventually get between 45,000 and 55,000 fans in.
A venue of that size would put the small Welsh Football Club on par with the likes of Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium at 55,000 and above Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge with 40,000 capacity.
In SportsBiz: The widespread interest in F1 racing saw total race attendance spike to 6 million in 2023, and revenue soared to US$3.22Billion, according to owner Liberty Media.
Last year also marked the debut of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, as F1 grew to its capped-out 24-race schedule.
Finally, in combat sports: Undisputed Super Middleweight World Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez 60-2-2 and Jaime Munguia 43-0 with 34 by KO, both made weight as they prepare to face off this morning for their world title showdown at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.
Alvarez weighed in at 75.6kg, while fellow Mexican Munguia tipped the scales at 76.1Kg.
Let’s get ready to R U M B L E!
