The Philippines a Century Hence by José Rizal is a socio-political essay written in four parts between 1889-1890, and published in serial form in the magazine La solidaridad. In what is one of the most significant socio-political works of the movement in Spain, Rizal traces the circumstances leading to the awakening of the Filipino and the birth of the national Filipino spirit.
In his essay Rizal emphasises the need to establish a new kind of political relationship between Spain and the Philippines in order to avoid a total break-up, giving an ultimatum: the need either for reform or independence. What Rizal had envisioned in his essay eventually came to pass. In 1898, the Americans wrestled with Spain to win the Philippines, and eventually took over the country, and five decades after Rizal’s death, the Philippines gained independence.
