There are fears of a major global trade war after President Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China starting immediately. He added that 'very substantial tariffs' would follow for the European Union. Goods exported from Canada and Mexico to the US will be hit with a 25% tariff; products from China face a 10% levy. Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country would face difficult times as a result but promised a 'forceful' retaliation. Many Chinese businesses were certain the tariffs were on their way and have been taking pre-emptive action. Many have moved their production lines offshore, to places including Cambodia. Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Sarah Smith in Washington and Laura Bicker in Cambodia.Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1rbfUog For more news, analysis and features visit: www.bbc.com/news #BBCNews

Thirty-seven people have been brought ashore after a cargo vessel collided with an oil tanker off the east coast of England. One person is in hospital while the other 36 mariners from both crews are "safe and accounted for", says local MP Graham Stuart. Jet fuel is spilling into the North Sea following the collision off the East Yorkshire coast, the owner of the tanker says. The US-flagged Stena Immaculate appears to have been hit while at anchor by the Portuguese-flagged container Solong, according to tracking data analysed by BBC Verify. Canada's next prime minister, Mark Carney, vowed to win the trade war against US President Donald Trump, after a landslide victory to replace Justin Trudeau. Carney, who will be sworn in as PM in the coming days, pledges retaliatory tariffs on US goods until "Americans show us respect”. The 59-year-old, who has never held elected office, easily won the leadership race with 86% of the vote. Carney is likely to announce a speedy general election, and although the gap is narrowing with the Conservative opposition, the polls show them still in the lead Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1rbfUog For more news, analysis and features visit: www.bbc.com/news #Canada #US #BBCNews…
There are growing fears that Syria stands on the edge of a return to widespread violence after days of sectarian bloodshed. A human rights group estimates it has killed at least 1,000 people in the city of Latakia. The country’s leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has appealed for unity during the worst period of unrest since he took control last December. He has also vowed to hold anyone involved in harming civilians accountable, after days of clashes where Syrian security forces allegedly killed hundreds of civilians from the Alawite religious minority. Amid the fighting, hundreds of civilians living along the Mediterranean coast have fled their homes. The Trump administration believes Ukraine is "ready to move forward" with a ceasefire process, according to a senior US state department official. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky is in Saudi Arabia for a state visit, ahead of talks between US and Ukrainian officials on Tuesday. Officials from Ukraine and the US will meet for the first time since the clash between their two leaders last week. Zelensky is under pressure to make concessions ahead of any peace talks, amid an ongoing pause in US military aid and intelligence sharing. The UN is urging Syria's interim leaders to take swift action to protect civilians following a wave of violence against members of the minority Alawite community. The violence began after loyalists of former President Bashar al-Assad - whose regime was toppled last December - ambushed government forces in recent days. Government security forces are said to have been carrying out reprisals in Latakia Province, where at least 1,000 Alawites, including children are said to have been killed in recent days. The BBC has not been able to independently verify the death toll. The Alawites are a minority sect of Shia Muslims, from which the Assad family originates. Syria's interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa – who played a leading role in the rebellion that toppled Assad – has called for peace and announced an investigation into the violence. But so far, he hasn't directly addressed accusations that atrocities were being committed by his supporters. Syrians have been protesting against the violence in the capital Damascus. The UN says it's received "extremely disturbing" reports of whole families being killed, and has called on the interim authorities to take "swift actions to protect Syrians" while the US says the Syrian leadership must hold the perpetrators accountable. Syria's interim president Ahmed Sharaa has called for national unity after days of clashes, where it's been reported Syrian security forces have allegedly killed hundreds of civilians from the Alawite religious minority. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights - which monitors developments in Syria - said about 745 civilians were killed in around 30 "massacres" targeting Alawites on Friday and Saturday. The BBC has not been able to independently verify these claims. Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1rbfUog For more news, analysis and features visit: www.bbc.com/news #Syria #BBCNews…
Australian authorities say a body has been found in floodwaters and 13 military workers have been injured in a vehicle crash as wild weather from a tropical storm lashes the country's eastern coast. Cyclone Alfred was downgraded to a tropical low on Saturday but is due to make landfall near the Queensland capital city of Brisbane soon. Officials have warned residents to stay indoors and remain vigilant, saying the storm's threat is "not over". Winds have brought down trees and power lines and flooded low-lying roads. More than 300,000 properties are without power in the region. Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1rbfUog For more news, analysis and features visit: www.bbc.com/news #BBCNews…
At least 14 people have been killed as Russian strikes hit several regions in Ukraine overnight, including Donetsk and Kharkiv, according to Ukrainian officials. Eight residential buildings and an administrative building were also reportedly damaged following strikes in Dobropillya in Donetsk. It comes after US President Donald Trump said he was "strongly considering" large-scale sanctions and tariffs on Russia, which he said is "absolutely 'pounding' Ukraine on the battlefield". The US has also limited Ukraine's access to satellite imagery and paused military and intelligence aid. The country's energy minister has accused Moscow of intentionally trying to harm the civilian population. Officials in Odesa and Kharkiv said these waves of attacks have left infrastructure damaged and homes on fire. At least 18 people, including four children, were wounded in the overnight Russian attack, according to Ukrainian officials. French-built Mirage jets were used for the first time to push back the attack, according to the country's air force.
