Rebels have reportedly taken over much of the key city of Goma in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, following three days of intense fighting between M23 rebels and the army and its allies. Rwanda has been accused of backing the Tutsi-led M23 rebel group in recent months, but the neighbouring country has denied giving the rebels any direct military support. Kenyan leader William Ruto had invited DR Congo President Félix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame to a virtual summit aimed at ending the fighting, later on Wednesday. But state media said Tshisekedi will not take part in the regionally brokered talks. Rwandan government spokeswoman Yolande Makolo said Rwanda would take part in the summit, but did not say whether Kagame would attend. French President Emmanuel Macron told Donald Trump that peace must not mean the surrender of Ukraine, at a news conference with the US President at the White House. The two leaders were meeting to discuss the war in Ukraine on the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of the country. The French leader interrupted President Trump to correct him, after Mr Trump said Europe's financial assistance to Ukraine was in the form of loans. Mr Macron said that was not the case as most of the money had been given to Ukraine by Europe. Earlier, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said he hoped “we can finish the war this year”. He was speaking at a summit of western leaders meeting in Kyiv to show their support for his country. At the United Nations in New York, the General Assembly agreed a resolution - drafted by the EU and the UK - to mark the anniversary of the war. It reaffirmed the UN's "commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine". The US opposed the resolution alongside Russia and North Korea, supporting a resolution which made no reference to backing Ukraine's territorial integrity and referred to Russia's invasion as a "conflict". Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Gary O’Donoghue in Washington, Nada Tawfik at the United Nations in New York, James Waterhouse in Kyiv, Jeremy Bowen on the frontline in Ukraine and Steve Rosenberg in Moscow. Apple plans to invest more than $500bn (£396bn) in the US over the next four years, starting with a new advanced manufacturing factory in Texas. The tech giant said it expected to create 20,000 new jobs over that time, with the "vast majority" of roles in research and development, software and artificial intelligence. It is not clear to what extent the spending is an acceleration of the company's current activities. Apple said the sum included everything from spending on suppliers to Apple TV+ productions. The announcement comes days after Apple boss Tim Cook met with President Donald Trump, who has made increased corporate investment in the US a priority. Friedrich Merz's conservatives have won Germany's election, well ahead of rival parties but short of the 30% vote-share they had expected. "Let's celebrate tonight and in the morning, we'll get to work," he told cheering supporters. His immediate priority is to try to form a government with the third-placed Social Democrats of Olaf Scholz. Even before the result was clear, Merz said his top priority was unity in Europe, so that "step by step, we can really achieve independence from the US". The other big winner in Sunday's vote was the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), who are celebrating a record second-place result of 20.8%. 1 Trump congratulates Germany’s conservative election winners as far-right AfD come second| BBC News 4:09
Germany’s conservative CDU/CSU party is celebrating after exit polls projected them to be the largest party in the federal parliament - or Bundestag - with 28.5% of the vote. The conservative leader Friedrich Merz, who is now expected to become Germany's next chancellor, hailed a "terrific election campaign" and said there was no time to waste in forming a government. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is set to become the second largest party in the country, with a record 20.6% of the vote according to the exit polls. US President Donald Trump congratulated Germany's conservatives on social media, calling it "a great day for Germany" - and for the United States under his leadership. Millions voted in Germany for a new federal government after the three-party coalition fell apart at the end of last year, prompting a snap election. Israel said it is indefinitely delaying the release of more than 600 Palestinian prisoners, in another potentially major setback in the ceasefire process. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the prisoners would not be freed "until the release of the next hostages is guaranteed, and without the degrading ceremonies". Netanyahu's statement came after four hostages taken captive on 7 October - Tal Shoham, Omer Shem Tov, Eliya Cohen and Omer Wenkert - were released on Saturday. Australia’s busiest waterway, Sydney Harbour hosts thousands of commuter ferries, recreational yachts and around 1200 commercial vessels each year. But boats burn fuel - and globally, shipping accounts for 3% of carbon emissions. And whilst the commuter ferries here are to be replaced with electric ones in the next decade, BBC Click’s Nick Kwek has been to meet a local startup that’s already using robotics to clean up our waters. The past week has seen international diplomacy turned upside down as the US began talks with Russia to end the war in Ukraine. The decision to exclude Ukraine - and European countries including France, the United Kingdom and Germany - from these talks led to an emergency summit in which European countries sought to establish some influence over the process. But with the US and Ukrainian presidents embroiled in a dispute that led to President Trump calling President Zelensky a “dictator”, is their relationship beyond repair? And will Ukraine have any say over the terms of a peace deal? Newscast, Americast and Ukrainecast gathered in the studio for a special collaboration to unpack the enormous shift in international politics that’s unfolding. Apple has removed its highest level data security tool from customers in the UK, after the government demanded access to user data. Advanced Data Protection (ADP) means only account holders can view items such as photos or documents they have stored online through a process known as end-to-end encryption. But earlier this month the UK government asked for the right to see the data, which currently not even Apple can access. Now the tech giant has decided it will no longer be possible to activate ADP in the UK. It means eventually not all UK customer data stored on iCloud - Apple's cloud storage service - will be fully encrypted.
