She returns to Mr. Blackwood, begging him to take back her soul, but he tells her it's too late. The price of a soul is not measured in material possessions, but in the ability to truly love and be loved. Lily is devastated. She has traded her soul for a life that is nothing but an illusion. The story ends with Lily vanishing into the city, lost and alone. Mr. Blackwood watches her go, a weary sadness in his eyes. He has seen this countless times before.
