×On This week's Grandstanders show Craig and Jane will talk about foods that could sabotage your workout (here's a hint: cake is one of them), but also discuss the psychology behind the foods we crave, and why we think we're 'missing out' when we refuse junk food. Also: Are you "time sick"? Take a quiz... in your spare time and find out! And we have The Grandstanders great debate on Denial of the foods you love vs Planned indulgence... The duo also chat to the man who has been Jane's inspiration for the last sixteen years, Pete O'Brien...who tries an Irish accent, in honour of St. Patrick's day. The keyword here is 'tries'.…
Team Grandstanders, Craig Harper and Jane O'Brien, are back to share in your Saturday mornings! Lots of research-prompted topics this week. In the Netherlands, a new product is being engineered- meat grown in a lab test tube. Would you be willing to eat this? A little bit closer to home, the Herald Sun interviewed women on the topic of beards. Do you like them? Do you not like them? Are there requirements for an attractive beard?....and what about a stubble? Also, research on weight loss and whether it's contagious! Studies suggest that certain friends can influence your weight range- are you convinced or does this sound like a mere coincidence to you? If you've been struggling to sleep, or want to get better quality sleep, tune into our interview with Elizabeth Shannon - the 'guru in all things sleep'. Whilst many may think strategically about diet and exercise, we often lack a sleep strategy. Elizabeth chats to us about Natural Sleep Solutions and how to get some good quality wink time. Also, gems to consider for our daily life. Exercise considerations- how can we exercise more productively and for return? Avoid time-wasting in the gym - train well rather than train lots. The honey vs sugar debate- loading your cuppa with honey rather than sugar, is this really better for our health? Rounding us off, the rodent happenings in Melbourne - the rat plague. Are you worried? Download or tune into the podcast!…
With Jane back to the Grandstanders after a brief hiatus, the duo wastes no time in getting into life's serious business, such as hospital beds and Justin Bieber. Also, listen in for an interview with dietitian and naturopath Nina Stabey about the Gut and Psychology Syndrome!
The Grandstanders talk weekly challenge, weight loss, weight vests and worthwhile friendships on this week's show. Our lovely Jane O'Brien was not feeling too ace this week, so Craig is joined by another blonde J as his fill-in cohost; please meet Jac! Together, Craig and Jac usher us into the third instalment of the Weekly Challenge. If you have been struggling with the past two weekly challenges, this week's challenge could be the one that gets you on board! It's simple, achievable and practical - for everyone. Join us as we take positive steps to make improvements to our health and well-being. One particular "shocking" news story sparks discussion on the topic of weight loss; a three year old was told that she needs to loose weight. Do you agree? Craig and Jac review the story and tells us what they think. For listeners who have been journeying with the Grandstanders for awhile, they may be aware that Craig has a weight vest. The idea is that by wearing a weight vest whilst doing routine physical activities, you significantly increase your energy expenditure! Jac is intrigued and can't "wait" to try it out. Finally, talking worthwhile friendships. Should we have a criteria for friendship? What about friends who may put us down? Should we confront them, put up with it, or have a healthy discussion in good time? Rounding us off, lively banter on 'virtual shopping' - its benefits, its pitfalls and its therapeutical value (if any)! Download, or listen to this week's podcast !…
Wondering how you could spice up you Saturday mornings? Look no further than 89.9 LightFM for the Grandstanders - the show where Craig Harper and Jane O'Brien takes you on an adventure packed educational journey through the world of sports and healthy living. Hold on to your seats, hats and whatever you can hold on to because the Grandstanders are back and they are ready to blow you away! Jane had a fill in co-host as the Grandstanders kicked off this week's show. Craig decided to show up a couple of minutes late. Was it just a coincidence... or did Craig have some trouble getting out of bed? Filling in for the mean time was Brett while Jane had the opportunity of sitting in the "Big Seat". On this week's show the Grandstanders chat with Sally-Anne McCormack about ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts), discuss excercise obsession, tackling the fear of veggies and more. Craig steps in just in time to take the show to a new level. This could also be because Jane kept his chair warm for him. Hear how Jane feels that Craig is a control freak. Craig and Jane talk about the effect of processed food on the human body. They discuss about the very interesting way that Stefani Bardin from the US decided to do research on this topic. The research involved capsule sized camers, the stomach and noodles. Also they explore the effects of microwaving food. The Grandstanders also debrief about the challenge that was launched last week. Listen to the results that listeners sent in. Does going one day with nothing but water make any difference? Hear the Grandstanders solve this challenge. The 'challenge captain' - Craig, comes up with another Grandstander’s Health Challenge for the listeners this week. Listen to the podcast to find out what this challenge is. This week, Jane secured the service of Clinical Psychologist Sally-Anne McCormack. Jane admires Sally-Anne and that's not just because of the number of credentials after her name, but also because she might help her in picking on Craig! Sally-Anne McCormack is a clinical psychologist with private practices in Blackburn and Burwood East in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. She is a registered psychologist, counsellor, media consultant, former teacher, wife and mother of four. In addition, she became an author when her first book - Stomp Out The ANTs, a self-help book to learn strategies for preventing depression, anxiety and stress. According to Sally-Anne, ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts) are annoying, but everyone gets them and they can be hard to get rid of, but if we practice certain techniques we can spot them early and prevent a plague. Also on the Grandstanders this week - the story of a man who ate too much burgers, a new way to kick the habit of smoking and itsdisadvantages, excercise obsession and much more. To listen to all these interesting topics and more, download and listen to the Grandstanders podcast.…

Welcome to the second instalment of the Grandstanders for 2012! A jam-packed Aussie flavoured edition this week as we talk the Aussie Open and our Prime Minister. The Australian Open is Jane's favourite two weeks of the year; it puts a sure skip to her step. So, who better than Jane to give us a review of the Murray vs Djokovic semi-final clash? Craig explores the non-tennis side of tennis..... Bernard Tomic's alleged breach of a restricted licence- has he done himself a disservice by the way he reacted when booked by the police? The screaming (grunting) of women's tennis - should it be banned and does it serve a purpose? And finally, the dollars in women's sport - should female tennis players be paid as much as male tennis players? Is this an issue about equality or commercial reality, or both? Taking a slightly different turn in the second hour, the Grandstanders explore the relationship we have wih food. Jane shares with us the research finding on food addictions and the top four foods that the majority struggle to eat in moderation. A few personal anecdotes are included as Jane describes her flourless chocolate cake, and Craig shares his personal struggles with eating habits. Finally, a recount and review of the Australia Day event where Prime Minister Julia Gillard was forced to flee the mob, under protection of her body guard. Jane is annoyed by the chain of events and Craig comments on the attention that the body guard has attracted from the media. Today on the Grandstanders it's all about survival - survival to stay healthy amongst food a-plenty at Christmas parties and survival stories from the news. Craig and Jane brings you tips for preventing Christmas party weight gain. They also talk genetics: why is it that skinny people find it difficult to put on weight and over-weight people find it difficult to put off weight? Is it true that everyone has a default weight set point that their body naturally reverts to? Surprising results from research - it hardly seems fair that for some people calories turn into muscles without much work! (mind you, they are the exception). Also answers to listeners’ questions and the truth about carbohydrates – are they really that bad for you? Continuing with the theme of research, the Grandstanders report on the latest, cutting-edge 'yawning' research. Did you know that yawning may be an expression of social empathy and that we are more 'contagious' to the yawns of those that are ours (family and friends)? Tune in for the implications of this research and why this may be life-defining for Craig. Also, lots of encouraging stories from the news. For a story that invokes wide-eyed wonderment: paralympian Monique van der Vorst's story of recovery. Not only an incredible demonstration of will-power, but a powerful reminder that good things can come out of bad situations. Finally, the much-loved light-hearted banter between our co-hosts.....Craig comments on Jane's fashion sense and her 'lumberjack' look. Jane's recount of her husband's revelation on health and fitness. This and much more on this week’s Grandstanders! Listen or download below.…

We also talk BPA (Bisphenol A) this week - the nasty chemicals sometimes used in food packaging. Find out what it is, how to spot it and how to avoid it. This and much more on this week's Grandstanders Podcast.…
On The Grandstanders this week, Craig tells us about Jane’s trip to hospital. Jane currently has pneumonia and was bedridden and in hospital for four days. Jane said due to her current health, she might even fall asleep on air! Due to her illness, Jane challenged Craig to organise the show this week, because she had nothing prepared. The first thing that Craig set out to do was to ask listeners about how to get rid of a sore throat or more importantly, Jane’s dodgy lungs! Staying on topic about Jane’s hospital stay, whilst there, a patient came in and asked Jane to open a package for her. To Jane’s surprise it was a packet of cigarettes! Craig said it was a good case of Irony. The patient then asked Jane what she was in for, and truthfully Jane told her. The patient then exited the room really quickly, before Jane had time to explain. Craig spoke about Thursday night’s 2011 AFL draft and how Greater Western Sydney Giants - the new team entering the AFL, and how they got 14 of the first round picks. Craig also said how he was surprised how Brendan Fevola was over looked on the draft as he was top goal scorer 3 years ago. Jane spoke about a spectacular story of how a 61 year old man pulled over to help a woman change her tyre. The man drove further down the road and had heart attack. The best part of this story was that the woman he assisted earlier pulled over and performed CPR on him and saved his life!. Another heart warming story from Germany, an armed robber burst into a house, but left humbled and empty handed, because a 5 and 6 year old who were in the house at the time offered the thief their piggy banks. The robber left embarrassed, and hopefully a little wiser perhaps.. This rounds up another great week of the Grandstanders. Listen or download the Podcast below!…

Jane shares annecdotally on the positive power of friendship and the negative impact of destructive words..... Continuing with the new segment Tips for a Healthier Home, we explore the possible hazzards lurking in the lounge and living room! Whilst the lounge may not strike us as one of the dirtier rooms in the house, it is more bacteria-filled than we think. Listen for tips and learn to say goodbye to the dangerous resistant bacterias which may be housing quietly on shared gadgets. Special guest, Melbourne Vixen netball player, Bianca Chatfield joins us to talk the newer concept of the game: Fast Net. Every Saturday the Grandstanders are here sharing the love, doing their best to add a little something to your Saturday mornings! Things get a little personal for Jane today.....she shares with us the highlight of her week, and answers (slightly probing) questions from Craig regarding her romantic history. Was marriage a goal? Craig and Jane wanted to find out who should perform for next year's Grandfinal. As you can imagine, there were a few surprising suggestions. Jane feels that their audio should be backed by some visual graphics... like a powerpoint presentation. Craig talks about the different learning styles. He thinks he is an "experiential" learner. It's Grandstanders installment number 14 million and 62 (if you believe Craig), on the biggest weekend in the sporting calendar. So of course, we talk the grand final (although this show went to air before Geelong's spectacular win!). Not only is it big here in Melbourne, but also around the country and even other parts of the world. There was also another grand final last week - and Gary Ayres, coach of 2011 VFL premiers Port Melbourne, is our special guest this week. He's a former player too - with 5 premiership games and 2 Norm Smith medals under his belt - and joins us to share his thoughts and philosophies on coaching, learning, development and life in general. Plus whether he'd consider an AFL coaching role if a club came knocking... Off the fast moving wheels of footy and the first week of the school holidays is over - much chagrin to many parents who often find themselves playing kids' entertainer. But Jane has found the first week very relaxing! Craig hasn't though: when a physiotherapist needed to play with his neck this week (either called a neck adjustment..... or neck cracking depending on your predisposition), Craig found it rather unpleasant. He's a self confessed 'neck-baby'. Or should that be neckcrackophobia? What process does our processed orange juice go through before it gets to our shelves? You'll be suprised. And once you'll hear it... like Jane, you'll only want orange juice with visble pulp! Jane's been on a retail therapy trip with mum... but with a difference: previously described as a "human pipe cleaner" by Craig, Jane is one of the only women in Australia who actually wants to fit into a bigger size. Craig carefully masters the art of digging himself out of a near miss with a you-should-never-say-that-to-a-woman comment, but Jane dishes it out too today: sharing a birthday with today's guest, Craig just isn't ageing as gracefully! And just when you thought you couldn't possibly fit anything else into a 40-minute podcast, we also talk depression in dogs (and how to diagnose it), plus office workstations and whether those new-fad 'standing workstations' really are a good idea. And Masterchef winner Julie Goodwin has hit out at the fat police - Craig weighs in to the debate. Hear it all in this week's Grandstanders podcast - listen below, download, or subscribe on iTunes. Got a question for Craig and Jane on health and fitness? E-mail thegrandstanders@lightfm.com.au or send a message through Twitter - or text or phone them live during next Saturday's show, from 8-10am on 89.9 LightFM. "You should never place any restrictions on how good you can or can't be - and never be satisfied, because there's always a slightly better way of doing it." - today's guest, Gary Ayres…

Lots of sport. Lots of health. Lots of motivational stuff. That's how Craig introduces the show at least! But it turns out he was right. Not just AFL but NRL this weekend - because the Storm's winning streak has been broken! Also post workout soreness: how do you relieve those screaming muscles? And today's guest: Olympic weightlifterDeborah Acason. Formerly Deborah Lovely, she found her love for weightlifting at just 12 years of age, while lifting logs to build treehouses with all the boys. She's taken a journey of multi talents to get to weightlifting though: playing rugby for Queensland, competing on the track and field, and even cycling. How did she get from there, to weightlifting?? Also: are our eyes really under assault from our lifestyle? And our new London Olympic report: with some fascinating gold medal facts. Your calls: on weird phobias - things that scare you, that don't scare normal people. And catastrophic wedding stories... involving super hot days, fire sprinklers and dogs. Is Jane's top pink or purple? A wedge has been driven between the Grandstanders: over the colour of said top. Pink or purple - it's split the hostsand the LightFM office (well, the Saturday office contingent anyway). You be the judge! Will Mick Malthouse take a year off? And, Craig comes up with more nicknames for Jane "javelin with ears" O'Brien. That and more... in the Grandstanders this week!…
