The mining industry and its impacts are truly widespread. For some countries, it’s the main contributor to the economy, and helps to shape local societies. So, it’s important to look at how mining affects these communities, from the indigenous people and their land rights to the impact of new technological innovations changing the face of mining and the workforce.
Each Wednesday, join me, Peter Finn, managing director of FACE Contracting, as I navigate the ups and downs of the mining industry with forward-thinking professionals from all walks of life. If you’re involved in the mining industry in any way – whether you’re a lifer or a high-school student looking to make the leap – Full Production is the podcast for you.
In the previous episode with Jerrod Downey, we got talking about, well, talking and how having strong conversations is important. Now, in part two of the chat we get down to brass tacks, and look a bit deeper into the mining industry itself.
Jerrod co-hosts the successful Crownsmen podcast as well as sits as the president of Crownsmen Partners. Crownsmen Partners is a firm that focuses on promoting heavy industry, while offering flexible and affordable options to its clients. In today’s episode, Jerrod has gone from interviewer to interviewee, and gives some insight into the health of the mining industry on the Canadian side of the globe.
We carry on the conversation and hit topics such as the perceptions of mining, how our elected leaders influence mining’s success, and why effective leadership is essential within the industry.
We also chat about:
- Technological innovation within mining
- Do governmental bodies understand the industry?
- Running a podcast, and how it allows others to say their piece
- Why we should be in the human game, not the numbers game
- Educating the public and defending mining in social situations
- How leading by example changes the working environment
- Why it’s important to have a sense of gratitude and appreciation
- The pressures of managing larger teams
- Jerrod’s experiences with ‘tech guys’
- Politics and voting – how we all have a part to play
- Why we should be enticing more skilled labour into the industry
