S3.5/E45: Music Publishing Isn't Scary or Confusing + How to Land a Sync Placement w/ Award Winning Composer Matthew Wang
Manage episode 375460360 series 3277035
One of host & author Emily White's goals in life is for songwriters to be able to clearly define music publishing in a way that they understand and can communicate to others. As well as collect on their music publishing in full. As publishing is the #1 missing revenue stream Emily identifies in her years of conversations with musicians. This episode will simply break down exactly that as well as share best practices to put yourself in a position to land sync placements - songs in film, TV, ads, video games, web shows and more. To do so, there is no one else Emily wanted to speak to other than Matthew Wang whom Emily initially met when he was interning with composing legend Hans Zimmer. Wang has written music for a vast range of different projects—from the Pharrell Williams-executive produced Netflix kids program Brainchild (2018), to Shaquille O’Neal’s basketball animated short HeadNoise (2021), for which he was awarded a Hollywood Music In Media Award in the category Best Song for Short Film. His extensive television composing credits include NBC’s The Young Rock (2022) and New Amsterdam (2018-2022), Showtime’s Yellowjackets (2021-2022), Hulu’s Shrill (2019-2021), Netflix’s Ginny and Georgia (2021) and Glow (2019), HBO’s Mrs. Fletcher (2019). He found his first feature film in IFC Midnight’s thriller Centigrade (2020), which he co-composed alongside Trey Toy, and went on to co-compose the television films RENO! 911: It's a Wonderful Heist (2022) and RENO! 911: The Hunt for QANON (2021) with Craig Wedren. Wang has also worked with Devo & composing icon Mark Mothersbaugh. We hope you learn as much as Emily did from this powerful conversation with Matthew!
