38:00In the final part of the Overwhelm Series I bring you: Adapt the plan - the essential follow on to planning the week that allows you to respond to the unknown and the unexpected and still feel in charge of the plan. Adapting the day should only take you a few minutes and can be done at the beginning of the day before you get to work. Resist the temptation to launch into fire fighting mode. Even fire fighters have a plan and know what they will do first and what to tackle next! Together with planning the week, adapting the plan is a skill you can learn that you'll keep benefitting year after year. Building these skills will : - give you more control over your work - more time for the other things that matter - increased capacity for your other work and for the demands you'll face at the next level - and, because you're calm, in control and are better at managing your time, it will make you so much more valuable as a lawyer. P.S. In BE THE FIRST I teach you Time Control - a set of skills that give you control over your time so you feel more in control, avoid overwhelm, have the capacity to grow to the next level and have more time for the other things that matter. If you're a mid to senior black lawyer and you want any of this, BE THE FIRST Progression for Black Lawyers is the coaching programmae you want to be in. 32:03Hello and Happy New Year! It's great to be back! Today I'm talking about setting your intention for 2025 so you create all the results you want this year. This isn't about setting new year's resolutions. It's about the thoughts BEHIND your new year's resolutions that are the difference between you giving up on your shiny new gym membership 3 weeks into January, and sustaining your new commitment to health and fitness for the entire year. Big difference! I had a rocky start to the year in that, unusually for me, I went into it thinking "I don't know what I want this year" and "What if I fail" (and a whole host of other fears). But thanks to the coaching tools I have (and which I teach you inside BE THE FIRST and CONFIDENT Black Lawyers) I can catch these thoughts and redirect my brain to thinking more intentionally and powerfully so that 2025 is everything I want it to be. Have you set your intention for the year? What results do you want to create for yourself in 2025? How will you keep going with your resolutions this year? I answer all these questions and more in today's recording. Happy New Year and happy listening. P.S. If you're a black lawyer and you want to build the confidence to succeed this year, join CONFIDENT Black Lawyers - my foundational programme for black lawyers at every stage of their career. 58:31The better you are at managing overwhelm the more in control you will feel and the better you'll perform. This session is part 2 (Plan the week) of a 4 part series to help you manage overwhelm at one of the busiest times of the year (and any other time you need to). In it I teach you one of the simplest and most effective tools for managing your time so you stop feeling overwhelmed and so your experience of being a lawyer - and other people's experience of working with you - is a better one. Here's what we cover: The no. 1 mistake I see lawyers making in how they think about controlling time How to spot when you're descending into overwhelm (the earlier you spot it, the easier it is to prevent or stop it) How planning the week affects not just your ability to manage overwhelm but also improves your prospects for promotion A step by step guide to planning your week so the important things get done and you find time for the other things that matter. P.S. In BE THE FIRST Progression for Black Lawyers I teach you Time Control where you learn how to take control of your time so you can perform to your potential and so your progression is both measurable and sustainable. If you're a mid to senior black lawyer and you're ready to progress to the next level, this is the programme you want to join. Book a free consult with me to find out whether BE THE FIRST is for you. 51:02Feeling overwhelmed? You're not alone. Almost everyone I've spoken to these past few weeks (clients included) has commented on the alarming speed with which time is passing and how little control they feel they have over it. Nobody said lawyering would be easy. But there are times when even the most efficient and resilient struggle under the weight of the pressure to deliver and the relentless seemingly endless demands being made of them. The last quarter of the year / the festive season / countdown to year end combo - this is one of those times. It's hard not to feel overwhelmed. To think there's too much to do in too little time and you've got nothing left to give. You may even be questioning your career choices and whether this is something you want long term. If this is you, you're in the right place. This week is the first in a 4-part Overwhelm Series I'm bringing you to support you through one of the most challenging times of the year (even if it's also one of the most festive and fun). In this episode I share a simple process for getting out of the crisis of overwhelm - when you've reached your limit and you've got nothing left to give - and into the feeling that time is yours and you get to be in charge of it. Here's what I cover: How you know you're experiencing an overwhelm crisis and what it feels like in your body How your thoughts about time make it harder to manage your time The simple mindset shift that will change how you feel and give you authority over your to do list The 4 easy steps you can take right now to get out of overwhelm today Happy listening P.S. In BE THE FIRST you learn Time Control, a toolkit of time management strategies that support you to perform well, deliver on time and find more time for the things that matter outside work. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and the fear of overwhelm is the reason you're not progressing your career, book a free consult with me and let's talk about how I can help. You are capable of anything you set your mind to. The more you believe this is true the more confident you will be in who you are. The more confident you are the easier it will be to navigate the challenges of being black in a white world, the further you will go in your career and the more fulfilling it will be to get there. Right now "I am capable of anything I set my mind to" is not the thought your brain offers you on a typical day! It's more like "I'm a fraud" "my success is down to luck" and "I'm going to be exposed" (Classic Imposter Syndrome) or, "I'm the only one" "I can't be myself" "Places like this don't want people like me" (Environmental Imposter Syndrome). The problem with these thoughts is they feel terrible. They make you feel anxious and stressed and that you're not enough, which drives you to overwork and overthink in a way that holds you back in your career. The result? Lawyering feels hard and overwhelming, you either don't progress or you get left behind and your confidence never grows. In episode 65 of Legal Imposters I give you a simple and powerful solution to all of this: believe you are capable of anything you set your mind to, and let this thought drive how you feel and how you show up to your day. This will challenge you at first. But that's only because you've forgotten who you are. The moment you take the steps to remember not only will you recognise this as true, you'll realise you've know it all along. You'll connect to the person inside of you who is capable of anything and this will give you the confidence to succeed. I talk you through all of this and the steps you can take to get started, in episode 65 of Legal Imposters. Here's what I cover: how your thoughts create your results thinking on purpose the value of believing you are capable of anything how to get started today P.S. If you're a black lawyer and you're tired of self doubt holding you back in your career, join CONFIDENT Black Lawyers, the new online confidence building programme for black lawyers at every stage of their career, where I give you a proven process and a practical tool for overcoming Imposter Syndrome so you have the confidence to succeed in a white world. 43:17When you have confidence in who you are, your whole experience of being a black lawyer is going to change. You won't just know you're capable of anything you set your mind to. You're going to believe it enough to keep overcoming Imposter Syndrome and perform to your potential. You're going to stop thinking of yourself as the only one and start believing you're the first. You're going to stop being in your head so much and start being more present, making it easier for you to get started on the task and just get it done. You're going to stop second guessing yourself and worrying you'll get it wrong. Instead you'll make decisions thoughtfully and easily and, no matter the outcome, you will always have your own back. But the best thing about being confident in who you are is how you'll feel about being a black lawyer in a white world - Instead of feeling powerless and that your life and your career are things that happen to you, you are going to feel so POWERFUL. You're going to feel you have so much CONTROL. You're going to FEEL LIKE YOURSELF again. And you will know, and believe it at your core, that the circumstances you find yourself in will never be big enough to stop you. In this episode of the Legal Imposters Podcast I talk about what it means to have confidence in who you are and all the ways your life will be transformed when you have it. I cover: The difference between confidence in what you do and confidence in who you are (and why you should focus on the latter) What it means to have confidence in who you are The 5 step process that helps you build it; and The difference it will make when you have it. All of this is available to you and you can start having it the minute you begin building confidence in who you are. To get started on your confidence journey, come to my live webinar on Friday 15th November 2024 at 1pm UK: How To Be Confident. It's free but you must register to attend. 53:30If you're a black lawyer, the chances are you have Imposter Syndrome or will experience it at some point in your career. Because for you Imposter Syndrome is different. It's not just internal. It's environmental. So even if you know you deserve to be here and remember how hard you worked to get here, there a good chance Imposter Syndrome is showing up in your career and holding you back as we speak. It is showing up in how you feel - isolated, alone, not enough, other than It is showing up in how you work - overworking, overthinking, playing small, self sabotage And it is showing up in the results you have in your career right now - feeling undervalued; being left behind, not getting the recognition you deserve, feeling constantly overwhelmed and stressed. However Imposter Syndrome is showing up for you and whatever the cause, there's a way to overcome it so that instead of holding you back it gives you the confidence to succeed: All you have to do is, Remember who you are This is it. This is the answer to overcoming Imposter Syndrome that you've been searching for. It's as powerful as it is simple. And it's the only answer you'll ever need. When you Remember who you are you connect to the version of you that is capable of anything you set your mind to. This gives you confidence in who you are and empowers you to get to work. And every result you create from that place just increases your confidence further. This is how confidence is built. This is how you succeed. This session is a masterclass on Imposter Syndrome. Every senior black lawyer will tell you: if you want to progress in a white world, you must have a sponsor - someone invested in you, willing to advocate for you, champion you, mention you in rooms you don't have access too, positively influence the views of those who don't know you. But winning a sponsor isn't always easy. For many it happens by chance. For most it doesn't happen at all. So what do you do when you want to progress your career but you can't find the sponsor to support you? The answer is, sponsor yourself. That's right. YOU be the one to put yourself in rooms you don't have access to and to win opportunities that wouldn't otherwise go to you. This isn't as hard as it sounds. All you have to do to sponsor yourself is to proactively progress your career. That's it. Just decide you are going to progress to your goal and follow a proven strategy that will get you there. In this session I outline what that strategy is and show you how following even just one of those steps is going to not only create forward momentum in your career, it's also going to invite an endless flow of micro acts of sponsorship and attract that sponsor that you so eagerly await. Here are the 6 steps to take to proactively progress your career: Get clear on the goal Implement feedback Build your brand Build relationships with people different to you Be visible Showcase your value All of this I teach you in BE THE FIRST Progression for black lawyers. We work together to help you choose the right goal. I teach you the Feedback Formula, Intentional Brand Curation, Relate-Agility, High Visibility and the Value Equation - unique tools and concepts designed to progress your career in a way that is both measurable and sustainable. 39:28Imposter Syndrome is different for people of colour. It's not just internal. It's environmental. You know about regular Imposter Syndrome - the one where you think you're a fraud, tell yourself your success is down to luck and think that any minute now you're going to be exposed - but do you know about environmental Imposter Syndrome and are you aware of how it's holding you back? In this episode I explain how Imposters syndrome can hold you back as a black lawyer, even when you don't think you're a fraud. I introduce you to the concept of "environmental imposter syndrome" the feeling that your an imposter that results from working in a firm or organisation that is neither diverse nor inclusive and / or where you're subjected to racism or feel you can't be your true self. Here's what you'll learn: What environmental Imposter Syndrome is and how it is different and yet the same as regular Imposter Syndrome The 4 different levels that we experience any form of Imposter Syndrome What you are doing or avoiding doing right now which shows Imposter Syndrome is holding you back The simple solution to your Imposter Syndrome and how you know it will work What to expect when you got to implement the solution plus how joining CONFIDENT BLACK LAWYERS, my upcoming programme will solve your Imposter Syndrome and give you the confidence you need to succeed in a white world. You're good at what you do. So why don't you feel it? Why does your confidence lag so far behind your accomplishments? Knowing you're a good lawyer is one thing. But having the confidence not to overwork or second guess yourself, to speak up in meetings and to seize opportunities before you're 100% ready - this is something else entirely and it requires confidence in who you are. As a black lawyer striving to succeed in a white world, you spend a lot of time either thinking you're an imposter or being made to feel like one. But whether your Imposter Syndrome comes from telling yourself your success is down to luck and that you're going to be exposed, or from the public school banter and bonding over what your white colleagues did over the weekend, the effect is the same: you lack confidence in who you are in the moments you need it most and this stops you performing to your potential. If this is you, you're in the right place. I'm here to help you change that. In this episode I tell you exactly what to do when you want to speak up more in meetings but keep telling yourself "I don't know enough" or "I'm not articulate enough". I explain the difference between internal and external Imposter Syndrome and give examples of some of the ways Imposter Syndrome is holding you back right now. I talk about the gap between "knowing" you're great at what you do and "believing" it enough to be visible, showcase your value and build relationships with people different to you. Last but not least, I introduce you to Confident Black Lawyers, my new online programme for lawyers at every level that builds confidence in who you are and gives you a practical tool for connecting to that confidence everytime you need it. Should I stay or should I go? Should I go for partnership or should I stay where I am? These are just some of the questions you've been asking yourself for months, maybe even years now, that are keeping you stuck in the Confusion Stage. The Confusion Stage The Confusion Stage is the stage in your career where you've stopped moving forward and are just treading water stuck in indecision over where you should go next in your career. Going through the motions I see alot of you getting stuck at this stage and allowing too much time to go by before you make a decision. So you spend alot of time going through the motions of your day job feeling restless and unmotivated, confused and disengaged. Not challenging yourself, not being proactive and with no focus or direction. The result is that the months and years go by and you are left with what I call the pain of unfulfilled potential - that inner knowing that you are capable of more that is crying out to be heard. A simple choice If this is you, you're in the right place. In this session I explain how the decision about which direction to go in your career is a really simple one: stand still or keep growing. And the decision I encourage you to make every single time is growth. You've got to choose growth! Choose growth Choosing growth means looking at the choices in front of you and finding the one that will require the most learning and development from you. It's the option you're most afraid of. It's the one that triggers your Imposter Syndrome. The one that creates the most discomfort. That's the option you want to go for. Who you become along the way Choosing growth isn't just about the goal and how your life will be different when you get there (bigger salary,, more status, more independence for example). It's about who you become along the way - the skills you will uplevel the new tools you'll acquire and everything I teach you that will ensure you don't just progress to the next level, you also thrive at that level. You will have everything you need to keep progressing, all the way to the top. Mid to senior black lawyer? If you're a mid to senior black lawyer and you have been stuck in the Confusion Stage unsure about where to go next in your legal career, I can help you with that. 35:52When someone tells you you're "not like normal black people"; when they note with surprise "you're very articulate" or comment on how well spoken you are or well put together you are - it's a micro-aggression rooted in negative racial stereotypes that is hurtful and offensive. But don't let micro-aggressions like this wound you and undermine you. Take control of the narrative and use them to empower you. "You're not like normal black people" doesn't diminish you. It doesn't condemn you to play small. It doesn't mean you're the only one. It proves you're the first. Tune in to discover how to make this micro-aggression empower you. P.S. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you want to progress within the industry, BE THE FIRST is the room you want to be in. In it I teach you how to navigate the challenges of being a black lawyer in a white corporate world so you can keep progressing, all the way to the top.
