[Beyond the Rona is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Queensland Greens and the views and opinions contained within this episode are our own]. Much has been said about the success of the Queensland Greens in Queensland for the Federal 2022 election, with the party picking up seats in Griffith, Ryan and Brisbane as well as securing a second senator for Queensland, joining well-loved Senator Larissa Waters. Political commentators are now turning their eyes towards the outer suburbs of Brisbane to places like Logan, to find out what the future holds for parties like the Greens and whether the Greens have any chance of success in the future out this way too. This episode, Tim and Andrea are joined by Dave again, to chat about their experiences volunteering this election, articles they’ve seen written about the Green’s success, and where they believe the other parties went wrong. Parts of the discussion include: How powerful people’s votes are The complexity of voting preferences between federal divisions The informal vote rate Educating people on the effects of climate change The angry vote for UAP and PHON The game: which do you prefer to gain the last senate seat? Stoker or Hanson? What it means to have our local member now as federal treasurer For our final episode this season, Tim, Andrea and Dave chose to name 1 big thing each that would help our community rebuild Beyond the Rona (post Federal Election 2022): Dave: Reconciliation, Treaty, Truth Telling and a First Nations Voice to Parliament so we can move forward as a nation Tim: Fix the wealth inequality, tax billionaires, provide adequate social services Andrea: Continue to Educate on STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) in schools and in the community and in free media everywhere so people learn about climate change Beyond the Rona Podcast is recorded in Logan, Queensland on Yuggera country. [Beyond the Rona is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Queensland Greens. Views and opinions contained within this episode are those of the individual.] 'Tis the week before Federal Election 2022 and Tim and Andrea are joined by fellow volunteer and Logan Greens Branch Spokesperson, Dave Kolcze to give some behind-the-scenes insight into what it’s been like during the first week of early voting in Rankin during this election period. All three are hoping for change, and so are many of the people they have met during the past 6 days of pre-poll. Tim, Andrea and Dave discuss: Interactions and conversations with voters Experiences on the different booths - Springwood, Woodridge and Browns Plains The types of people coming through pre-poll this week, what issues are important to them and how passionate they are about these issues Problems at the booths eg: the choice of venue, the way it’s set up, safety issues, carpark issues, accessibility issues, suitability for the community it serves How are voters choosing who to vote for Cultural and language issues Dave discusses a policy platform that is close to his heart - dental and mental health into Medicare. Andrea talks about the WeChat social media platform, used by 86% of the Australian-Chinese community to get Chinese Language news and how this platform is being harnessed by our politicians for political use during this election. Dave talks about finding volunteers and notes you don’t have to be over 18 to volunteer at the booth. We did a combined 3 Big Ideas for this coming Election Week: Dave: 1: Use Social Media Tim: 2: Volunteer on a booth Andrea: 3: Unify to kick out Scomo Beyond the Rona Podcast is recorded in Logan, Queensland on Yuggera country. Here we get to know a bit more about Western Waka Waka man, 21 year old university student and teacher aide, Jordan Hall, who is Greens Candidate for Forde - https://www.facebook.com/JordanHallGreens Jordan tells us what drives their campaigning to create a better future for all. Jordan laments on the pressure placed on the shoulders of young people in order to compete for jobs in the shadow of capitalism and how difficult it is for young people to keep focused on a clear view for the future while carrying that burden on their shoulders. The burden is complex including: The cost of higher education including university and TAFE in order to compete for a job that earns enough money to afford the soaring costs of living The privatisation of education and training which is to maximise the profits for educational facilities but therefore puts further financial burden on the person needing employment and training ie young people The fear of the effects of Climate Change for young people and what this means for how young people will experience their world in the future Whether young people will ever be able to buy a house in their futures or even have stable housing Flattened tax brackets which has created wealth inequality across Australia and less money available for publicly funded social services for young people Five times greater funding for private schools than public schools - again creating unequal opportunity for those who can afford private schooling Jordan explains how climate change is the most important Greens policy platform and comes above all else - https://greens.org.au/platform/climate They believe young leaders of the future will be able to help mitigate the effects of climate change in the future for rich countries but there will be differences in how badly people are affected according to level of wealth. We also discussed ideas for change in the schooling system. Jordan believes our national curriculum is in need of improvement for young people, as well as how we measure outcomes. Jordan thinks our whole schooling system may need an overhaul, possibly looking at overseas systems for direction. They believe people should vote for them because they actually care about the things they talk about and wants young people to have a better future. Jordan’s 3 Big Ideas: Climate Action Workers Rights and Protections, Raised Minimum Wage Social Justice for minority groups eg Trans People are currently not being treated equally Beyond the Rona Podcast is recorded in Logan, Queensland on Yuggera country. In this episode we speak with Nav Singh who is a member of the Indian community on the southside of Brisbane and on the senate ticket for the Greens. He immigrated to Australia 15 years ago. Nav discusses with Tim and Andrea the demoralization of the Indian community during the Covid period that occurred when the Prime Minister decided to initiate a 5 year jail term for the Australian citizens traveling from India, if they tried to enter the country when the Australian borders were shut. This is something that had never happened before in history. These Australian citizens were essentially left stateless. Nav described to us the immigration program which was initially thought of as an act of goodwill from the Australian government but actually the Indian community has been needed by Australia to help drive the Australian economy because we've needed workers. Nav said it costs around eight to $10,000 per person for someone to come into the country but then he also discussed once they get here how difficult it is to have left your family behind. It can then cost around $120,000 for you to bring both your parents over or you have to wait around 30 years for a humanitarian visa. The reason for the high costs and the long wait is because of the fact that the elderly are of no economic benefit to Australia meaning that they will not be working and will be seen as a burden to Australia. The 30 year wait is because of the backlog of humanitarian visas that are available. The other problems that Nav discussed are the actual employment that is available to the Indian community once they arrive, the fact that when they get here the main concern with employers is the English competency rather than the ability for the worker to do the job, even though they are contributing and paying taxes which is what they are here to do. Nav says working here in Australia is very difficult for members of the Indian community not only emotionally but for their mental health as well due to the casualization of the workforce but also because they are working in much lower positions than what they are qualified to do. They also tested for their English competency every two years when they have come from overseas and are deported if they're found to be not competent in English, which is a discriminatory practice considering many other adults would not pass the same English test. As well as this, there is an undertone of racism in the community towards the Indian community and they are not respected for their high levels of competency in their roles back in India, for their qualifications, their knowledge, their experience and for the treatment that they're having to endure for the time that they're here, as well as the emotional ordeal of being separated from their families. No matter how long they have lived here, they are still treated as “other”. The Prime Minister's response to this failure towards the Indian community during Covid was to highlight his ability to provide his family with curry on a Saturday night. However as Nav points out, the Indian community is able to make their own curry. What they would prefer is for the Prime Minister to actually help them. Nav’s 3 Big Ideas: Stop the casualization of the workforce Tax the billionaires and redistribute that wealth Sustainability of our water supply because water is essential and is being treated as a commodity Beyond the Rona Podcast is recorded in Logan, Queensland on Yuggera country. This episode our guest is Nicole Thompson who is the Greens Candidate for Wright in this federal election: https://www.facebook.com/NicoleThompsonGreens/ Nicole has been working as a Registered Nurse for 30 years and has also spent 20 of those years as a qualified Midwife in Australia. She’s worked in both Australia and the USA. This year, she has chosen to leave her job and concentrate full time on her role as a federal candidate, traveling around the Wright electorate and connecting with farmers, residents and community groups. Nicole lives on Tamborine Mountain which is a small community where the town has no mains supply for water and no town sewerage system. Residents living there tend to have their own bore water and live off-grid with roof-top solar and septic tanks for sewerage. The issues the residents face include being overdeveloped, and losing their water supply as residents complain to Nicole that their personal bores are drying up. Nicole says the loss of water from Tamborine Mountain is an issue they are facing while commercial giant Coca Cola is licensed to continue water mining in the area, without regard to the views of the residents. However, QUT is currently studying the effects of water-mining in the area to determine the level of what effect the water mining is having on the environment and the local community. The electorate of Wright: It covers the Scenic Rim and Lockyer Valley up to the NSW border. With more suburban areas like Greenbank and Yarrabilba; where new developments are going in for housing but with the 2 lane road remaining going into the estate. There’s a lack of infrastructure and Planning!. Then there is the “Food Bowl” of Scenic Rim and Lockyer Valley. Used for Agriculture & agri-tourism. This area brings in $400 million Gross product per year. Our discussion for Beyond the Rona this episode also covered: Water Rights & Water Licenses Health care in rural areas Staffing ratios especially in rural areas Poor Internet access: Digital Exclusion for Wright and the Scenic Rim Floods: Grantham, Lockyer Valley assistance Access to Mental health care in Wright, being rural and regional Queensland Domestic violence in the regions An issue we didn’t cover was bushfire management. Nicole notes that the Greens support hazard reduction burns and have a policy on this available online (although many in the regions don’t have internet access in order to view it). https://greens.org.au/bushfires Nicole’s 3 Big Ideas: The need for safe Staff Ratios for Nurses and Midwives Mental Health into Medicare Behaviour Programs like Respectful Relationships in Schools, Codes of Conduct and hopefully all this leads to an ICAC Beyond the Rona Podcast is recorded in Logan, Queensland on Yuggera country. 1 Rebuilding as One-United-Liberal-Nation - Troy Aggett 36:21

This episode we are joined by former Australian Federal Policeman and former Pauline Hanson One Nation Candidate Troy Aggett in Brisbane to get a view from the right for what changes are needed for Logan as we move forward into living with the Covid Pandemic and into the last few weeks of the federal election period for 2022. Troy was first a candidate for One Nation in Logan federally, and ended up running for One Nation four times. Pauline Hanson started with One Nation twenty-five years ago after she quit the liberal party in 1996. Troy says Pauline then set about removing the original members of One Nation after she joined. Troy says the One Nation policies are created by Pauline and James Ashby but don't have to be accepted by the PHON candidates as generally One Nation candidates are paying customers to the One Nation party in order to enter politics. According to Troy, the One Nation candidate pays $3500 to become a candidate for One Nation, then pays for all their printing costs and other candidate costs in order to campaign. If they win over a certain percentage of the vote, the AEC pays a certain amount per vote back to the party. Therefore, having candidates is a way of making money for the party. The candidate doesn’t have to agree with One Nation’s policies. Troy says the National & Liberal party work the same way too. And that if a liberal member is unable to make it through as a candidate in the liberal party, then they move to One Nation. So in this way, Troy says there isn’t much difference for voters between the National / liberal party and One Nation. He does feel sorry for the way that Pauline has been treated over the years though with relentless trolling, although he agrees that she is racist and that she does say inflammatory remarks which have continued to ensure air time for her and the party. Troy has also been for an interview with Clive Palmer. He is aware that his wealth has made him an extremely powerful man. This combination of wealth and power is not useful for the people of Logan if they wish to be paid fairly as Mr Palmer has previously been caught for not paying his workers superannuation, until he subsequently “decided” to do so. In short; Troy doesn’t hold much hope for change for the people of Logan as we build back better after the Rona. This is due to the influence of power, green, corruption and lack of democracy that is now apparent in our system of politics. He agrees we need an ICAC to clean up politics and says we need to turf out the politicians who have been in these jobs for twenty years too long. He thinks we need new people every two years so they aren’t sitting in the jobs for twenty years doing nothing. Other concerns: Troy says sole traders are not being looked after by any political party, instead it’s always medium to large size businesses that are always having policies directed towards them. Troy is also concerned about people ripping off the dole who are able to work. He believes more housing needs to be built in more regional areas to help with housing affordability. Troy’s 3 Big Ideas: 1. New people in Government every two years who will get something done 2. ICAC to clean up politics and bring back democracy 3. More policies to help Sole Traders Beyond the Rona Podcast is recorded in Logan, Queensland on Yuggera country. We acknowledge the traditional owners past and present. Suzanne Clarke is the Federal Candidate for Rankin and Linda McCarthy is the Federal Candidate for Forde representing the Animal Justice Party - https://animaljusticeparty.org/ - for this upcoming federal election. We begin this episode with Sue explaining how the Animal Justice Party (AJP) began and she explains that it was in response to the issue of Kangaroo Slaughter which the AJP is strongly against. (Sorry, NBN let us down for the video on this one in parts!) Some of the topics we discuss during this episode: Puppy farming and backyard breeding of animals and the fact that owning rescue animals has become popular / fashionable now Greyhound racing: the fact that it was successfully stopped in Logan in 2017 but is still continuing in Ipswich, and online gambling in Logan for Greyhound racing still continues The impact of consuming animal products on Climate Change: Sue and Linda state that we should be assisted to transition to eliminate or reduce our meat consumption in order to assist with the Climate Crisis Veganism: the cost, whether they experience any health problems, what is it like going plant-based now The meat industry: Sue and Linda state that the government subsidises the meat industry, however, meat is expensive for people to buy, and that consumer demand for plant based products will decrease the price. They discuss that we need a transition plan for workers as transitioning won’t happen overnight. They agree that the meat and livestock industry is reluctant to change. Sue and Linda discuss the media’s role in messaging for our diet and believe that barriers are put in place that are deliberately supportive of the meat industry rather than to support people transitioning to plant based diets AJP believes that going plant based uses less water, less land and less energy from the planet We briefly discussed animal welfare and the recent floods AJP works closely with Animal Liberation Queensland to advocate for animal rights We discussed the popularity in Logan of people having snakes and other reptiles as pets, wildlife zoos and the Animal Justice Party position on captivity of animals at Seaworld and within the tourism industry Sue and Linda discuss the Live Trade Export Industry and the efforts of the Animal Justice Party to shut this industry down. They agree that we need a transition for farmers for this industry too Sue's 3 Big Ideas: Less Gambling in Logan eg: Stop Greyhound Racing Action on Climate Change Address Animal Agriculture to address the spread of further viruses spreading Linda's 3 Big Ideas: Adopt - don’t shop for animals/pets Desex your pets Transition to Clean Energy Beyond the Rona Podcast is recorded in Logan, Queensland on Yuggera country. Ben is the Founding Partner at Chasing Rainbows - https://www.chasingrainbows.vc/ - an early-stage investment fund specifically aimed at creating equality in the investment space. The fund makes equitable investments in founders who come from under-represented backgrounds in tech and specifically invest in companies whose founding team consists of Women, People of Culture and those who identify as LGBTQ+. Ben is also an Advisor & Mentor at Austrade’s Landing Pad in San Francisco and was the CEO & Founder at SocialTable, also based in San Francisco. He’s also had roles in Lever, Salesforce and Oracle. In fact he started his career in the medical sales field. Ben explains to us how he started Chasing Rainbows particularly with the members of the LGBTIQ+ community in mind, because when they come out to their family members, they can become excluded from friends and family and this limits their opportunity to raise the capital required to start a business (which is commonly raised amongst friends and family). So this is where Chasing Rainbows comes in - to invest in these start-ups and support them on their journey. Tim and Ben then discuss the Pandemic and the opportunity it presented to have people working remotely. The problem it brought was that founders now need to be more creative in how they build teams and how they keep the company culture alive, since working remotely, you lose that element of “walk and talk” and getting to know each other. Ben says that businesses now need to use technology in a way that works for them, in order to find new ideas for using technology to keep relationships alive. In order to do this well, the Pandemic has illustrated clearly that we need better access to tech, and technology infrastructure. Andrea discussed the fact that nearly 30% of Australians are excluded from the digital world, according to the Australian Digital Inclusion Index (2021) and that this affects mostly people in lower socio-economic areas - https://www.digitalinclusionindex.org.au/key-findings-and-next-steps/ We then sidelined the discussion for a bit to talk about Digital Health, telehealth, the protection of patient information and the possibility of developing service-based businesses using tech - particularly for rural and regional areas. Government policy would assist these start ups, including the policy announced by Senator Larissa Waters to support Women-led Businesses for rural and regional areas - https://larissa-waters.greensmps.org.au/articles/policy-launch-supporting-women-led-businesses Ben agreed with the combination of government policy as well as tech to support founders starting up a business within their community and then staying in their community. Both Tim and Ben are looking forward to the continued growth of women in tech and the growth of Logan-based founders. Ben’s message for people who are interested in starting their own business is “Don’t hold yourself back” - although he does acknowledge that there are gaps in government policy and infrastructure to support new founders. In this episode we're joined by Andrew Tiggjan, an organiser for SEQUR (South East Queensland Union of Renters) - https://sequr.homes/ On their website, SEQUR is described as an organisation of committed community members who believe that the balance of forces currently sits too far in the favour of landlords and the real estate industry and that for renters to counter this we must organise ourselves together in a union, to leverage our collective strength. Andrew starts the discussion telling us the story behind how he began as a leader in this area, championing for the rights of renters and encouraging people to join a renters union. Tim then refers to a news article which details the declining rental vacancy rate in Brisbane, which went from 1.3% in December 2021 down to 1.1% in January 2022, with Rents predicted to rise by 10% or more in 2022 - https://www.realestate.com.au/news/rents-to-rise-as-brisbane-vacancy-rate-hits-16year-low/ Andrew explains how the low vacancy rates lead to an increase in power for landlords and an increase in fear for tenants for unjustified evictions and that this is where renters’ rights are being abused. Other abusive practices that have increased in the rental market include rent bidding, landlords not completing repairs in a timely manner, exorbitant rent increases, and landlords being unhelpful during the recent flood events in Brisbane and Logan. Andrew states that renters are not aware that the RTA (Residential Tenancies Authority) is not an advocacy service for renters and is a government organisation that is a neutral third party to manage the tenancy bond, but any dispute about that is taken to QCAT. For legal advice for renters, Tenants are better off contacting QSTARS and/or joining a renters union like SEQUR. Further pressures on the lack of housing stock is interstate migration and the sale of rental stock to owner occupiers. Andrew supports policy to have people own their own homes but discusses the need to increase housing stock, to increase public housing, and to increase the infrastructure that goes with the increase in population, such as public transport and roads. We discussed possible solutions to ease the burden of cost of living on renters and move costs such as water and electricity over to the landlords. One idea might be to have landlords responsible for water usage bills again, another is to encourage landlords to install roof-top solar. Andrew's 3 Big Ideas for improving renters rights in Logan: 1. Join a Renters Union (if there isn't one in your region, start one!) 2. Educate, Agitate 3. This episode's guest is Jackie Skein, Managing Director of My Logan Realty - https://www.myloganrealty.com/ Jackie has over 10 years experience in the real estate industry. Tim first heard Jackie speak on a Facebook Live for AUS Property Investors - https://www.facebook.com/groups/Auspropertyinvestorsgroup We begin the discussion talking about the public perception of what people think it’s like to live in Logan and how Logan City Council is working on improving Logan’s public image with campaigns like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrW2CQTAIRI Jackie believes we should focus on our strengths such as our diversity, our sense of community and our culture and we should all work together as a community to improve our brand of Logan. Tim, Andrea & Jackie also discuss the recent floods and the on-going clean up and what this means from a landlord’s perspective - including the landlord’s duty of care to their tenants. We discuss rising house prices in Logan and the reasons behind the loss of rental stock in the area. We reference a recent article in My News Feed: https://mynewsfeed.com.au/rental-crisis-in-logan-beenleigh-mother-and-her-sons-on-the-brink-of-homelessness/ which blames among other things, interstate migration to Logan as a main cause of rising rents in the area. Jackie agrees that interstate migration with those migrating from higher socioeconomic areas is certainly the case. But also, previous lockdowns and covid restrictions led to less houses being built within the usual timeframes. Rental stock being sold to owner occupiers taking more rental stock out of the market. We then go on to discuss the idea of living in group / share housing in order to share the rising costs of living and also share the rising costs of housing. Jackie believes we have to find community-led solutions to our issues. We discuss the need for education to become better landlords to treat their tenants better, but also education for tenants in order for tenants to know their rights as tenants. Jackie talks about how slow and frustrating it is when housing estates are built in Logan (like Flagstone and Yarrabilba) but are missing the required roads and other infrastructure to go with the population increase - and this takes ages to catch up. We need long term planning and investment to improve the housing situation in Logan. Jackie's 3 Big Ideas for Housing in Logan: 1. Less Red Tape and Council Fees for building Granny Flats and building in underneath 2 storey highset houses (eg 2.2m ceiling height) - [provided it isn’t in a flood zone] 2. Tax breaks for shared / group housing 3. The network has renewed us for another season so we're back for Season 2! We'll be doing weekly episodes up until the Federal Election (most likely to be held in May). Andrea’s 3 Big Ideas 1. Action on Climate Change 2. Free Uni & Tafe 3. Dental & mental health into Medicare Tim’s 3 Big Ideas 1. Addressing the climate crisis indirectly benefits non-climate issues 2. Check MPs & Senators Voting record - previous record of incumbents - did their actions align to your expectations? 3. We need to solve the housing affordability crisis - housing is a right Omicron Outbreak What went wrong - Fed Gov didn’t provide RATS to QLD, Private pcr testing shut down, covid patients not receiving positive test results for up to 10 days, many deciding not to test, many deciding not to isolate, other health care needs neglected, system overwhelmed for vulnerable people, some people isolated for extended periods of time without pay, loss of support workers for disabled people, food shortages, staff shortages. Federal response - in charge of sovereign borders, aged care, disability care, vulnerable communities like First Nations, PPE, quarantine, vaccination procurement & delivery, messaging & communication, medicare, testing equipment eg PCRs, RATS, Centrelink Response - Decided to just send essential workers back to work even if test positive to covid to keep economy going. Shortened quarantine time. State Response - in charge of state borders, vaccination roll out within the state, distribution of RATs and PPE once they arrive in QLD, state based testing clinics, vaccination clinics. Response - Decided to stop truck drivers requiring testing to deliver food to stores. Opened state borders. Held consumer meetings to try to understand what the concerns were on the ground and fix them but really everyone needed RATs. Eventually got PCR results returned quicker and treatment guidelines more streamlined, help lines etc. Improved their AI system - which was terrible! In this episode we chat to Max Hooper who has over 20 years experience as an engineer. He's a Brisbane local with a keen interest in infrastructure and planning. This episode was recorded in early December 2021, and has a focus on jobs for our tradies and working class people in the areas of truck drivers, small business owners, retail assistants, and others who might be affected by the impacts of decisions for infrastructure in the Logan area. Beyond the Coronavirus pandemic, what job opportunities exist for people now? Should people be prepared to retrain? Do they hold onto hope for a better future with a change of federal government policy? Joining Tim and Andrea for this discussion is Max Hooper, who is a local community advocate on the southside, an engineer, who is passionate about having all levels of government working together and across all parties to ensure the best outcomes for our community members. Max begins the discussion talking about how we met - during the 2020 Queensland State election where popular Stretton Labor MP, Duncan Pegg MP was re-elected. Max talks about how Duncan was popular across so many different cultural groups and across all the parties and at all levels of government and he says that this is a way to be more effective and get more done. (Sadly, Duncan passed away in June 2020). Max says the lack of co-ordination between the levels of government (council, state and federal) holds us back in terms of infrastructure. He explains: the States have sovereignty over what happens in the states, and the Premier of every state does their own thing (we saw this with Covid). But then the councils all have different ideas too. And they are all run by different parties. So, Max says, the way to get infrastructure happening is to unify, but listen to the experts. (Again, we saw this with Covid). Find common ground. No matter what party you are from. Have a shared vision. Otherwise these huge decisions land on the councils and they have a lot of competing interests with limited resources. We discussed the Federal Inland Rail project, which has stalled now with the Queensland section still undecided on whether it will continue to Port of Brisbane or Gladstone. Max discusses the plans to terminate in Acacia Ridge and use heavy freight transport to move the coal to Port of Brisbane. He also makes comment on the lack of progress of the Environmental Impact Statement that is required to complete the section of rail between Acacia Ridge and Port of Brisbane. We then move on to the Brisbane Olympics and whether this might bring new jobs for the southside. Max believes the Olympics 2032 could be used as a catalyst to bring together infrastructure, transport and planning for Brisbane and Logan. Max then talks about what it’s been like for retail workers being abused when asking people to use the check-in app before entering shopping centres. He says we need politicians that are more in touch with what people are going through. Politicians who understand the needs of the people and have more understanding of customer service. Max’s 3 Big Ideas: To have the local, state and federal levels of government work together better To have a youth summit - but guided by Gen X! To have an audit of our National Infrastructure and National Capability eg Energy, Water and transport - especially rural and regional…

In this episode with chat with community advocate and QLD Greens Candidate for Moreton, Claire Garton - https://www.facebook.com/ClaireGarton.TheGreens In this episode we discuss with Claire the impacts of the Inland Rail project on the people who live along the proposed route, which will transport coal all the way from Melbourne into Queensland in trains every half hour that are 1.8km long, and double stacked, when this project is completed. The Inland Rail project will result in extra noise from trains and trucks, vibration on houses, noise from container drops and unloading, pollution from trucks, increased traffic and congestion on roads, division of farmland, home acquisitions, and health implications from coal dust particles. The current Federally funded route begins in Melbourne and travels up through NSW, across the Queensland border and into Toowoomba. From here, the rail line route is undecided as to whether it will continue to either Port of Brisbane (a privately owned port) or Gladstone (a state owned port). Costs have blown out when trying to work out the route down the Toowoomba range and then terminating at Acacia Ridge. (It’s more expensive to go to Brisbane due to the Toowoomba Range). Another option from Acacia Ridge to Port of Brisbane is to transport the coal via trucks and it’s believed deals are being made with trucking companies to establish this. However, it is estimated to take 5000 trucks per day to transport the coal out to the Privately owned Port of Brisbane. The Mayor of Gladstone is onboard with the coal being transported through Queensland and up to the state owned Port of Gladstone. However, even if this was deemed to be the best route and supported by community consultation across Queensland, with a move to renewables, it is worth discussing if Inland Rail will actually be a worthwhile project in years to come? Or has it all been a waste of money? Claire, Tim and Andrea also discuss the Olympics and Brisbane being a host city for 2032. Tim talks about the lack of community consultation regarding infrastructure for the Olympics. And the fact that Gina Rinehart is now involved. Claire states she would love to see a Carbon Neutral or Net Zero Olympics and discusses this idea. Other discussions on domestic roof-top solar system battery storage, the need for a Federal Independent Anti-Corruption Commission (ICAC), infrastructure for schools especially for inclusive education. Claire and Andrea discuss what it’s like being in the community as a member of a minority group eg trans, disabled. Claire’s 3 Big Ideas: Treaty for First Nations People Local ideas for Moreton to get done, plus ICAC, climate change, kick out the LNP, get Greens into Balance of Power Fix Economic Equality in Australia in order to fix social issues Beyond the Rona Podcast is recorded in Logan, Queensland on Yuggera country.
