4X4: SERGIO MARTINO II: TORSO AND THE SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF A MINOR W/ERIK VANDERWOLF
In part two of two on Italian filmmaker Sergio Martino, we are joined once again by Screenwriter Erik Vanderwolf as he picks two 1970s classics (?) that show a little of Martino's range.
TRIGGER WARNING: BOTH FILMS CONTAIN SCENES OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AND IT IS DISCUSSED
TORSO (1973), is, to Erik's mind, the first "slasher" film as American audiences would come to know them. You know what? He makes a solid argument despite thinking it may be seen as a controversial idea. What begins as a fairly standard giallo with murders, sex and red herrings, shifts locations to the isolated countryside and very nearly becomes a different (and much better) film for its final third, one of the great sustained sequences of suspense in the genre. Is it the first slasher film? Did Martino invent one of the sturdiest genres of the last 50 years here? Listen and find out.
THE SUPISCIOUS DEATH OF A MINOR (1975) Is, we're pretty sure, a gritty cop thriller about a Detective Germi hunting down a kidnapper and killer. It may also be a comedy. We aren't completely 100% sure. The plot is outrageous, the location work sublime - it's fun! A unique fourth film in Martino's extremely long filmography that also serves as a canary in the coal mine about where the Italian film industry was headed at the time. Erik gives us all the dirt.
