These two words are often used interchangeably. But they are actually different things.

Is it possible to have one without the other or do they go hand-in-hand?Dr. Hannah Hartwell, Suki Jeffreys, Jim Shulman and Michael May joined me for this quick venture into how language is used and it is a great example of why what you think you said might not be what the other person actually heard.

For me, empathy is feeling how someone else feels. Compassion is caring about it. I think you can have compassion without empathy and now, after thinking about it more, I think it might also be possible to have empathy without compassion.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree with me? Are compassion and empathy the same thing?
