Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 64 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and sunny Tuesday morning 06 June 2023.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
In rugby: Manusina Samoa has won the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship on the Gold Coast yesterday, upsetting favourites Fijiana 18-19, with Cassie Siataga kicking all their points – 7 conversions. So Samoa will play in WXV2 and Fiji in WXV3 of the inaugural World Rugby WXV Competition in October 2023.
Samoa will be based in Cape Town, against hosts South Africa, Scotland, Japan plus the winner of Italy versus Spain and one other team from Asia.
Fijiana plays in WXV3 at a venue to be determined on the same dates, against Ireland and the loser of Italy versus Spain, plus three other teams from Africa and Asia.
In rugby league: It’s cruel at the top. NRL experts are already discussing who should be the next New South Wales Blues Coach if Brad Fittler loses the 2023 series.
Some say Canberra Raiders Coach Ricky Stuart should return for a third stint, after coaching in 2005 and 2011-12, someone – obviously a Maroons fan, has thrown up former Roosters assistant, Jason Ryles for the Blues.
A couple of experts – maybe looking for a job, argue the job had become too big for the limited time for any part time coach.
In football: Fabrizio Romano, one of world football’s most reliable and connected sources of transfer market news, announced on social media yesterday afternoon, that a contract offer – including the option of a third season – has been made to the all-conquering Celtic and former Socceroos boss, Ange Postecoglou, who has verbally agreed, to become Tottenham’s new Manager.
In SportsBiz: English Premier League Champions 2016, Leicester City, valued @ US$781Million, before their unceremonious fall from grace from the EPL, can expect that number to slump next season as they operate without a share of the lucrative EPL media rights.
And in the NBA: A one-man show from Nikola Jokic was not enough for the Denver Nuggets yesterday as a dominant 36-point fourth quarter saw the Miami Heat take a 111-108 win in Game 2 to tie the NBA Finals.
The incredible Jokic, scored 41 points, made 11 rebounds and four assists in the game, making NBA history as the first center to record 500-plus points and 100-plus assists in a single post-season.
And finally in boxing: World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman expects a mandatory challenge to be ordered in near future for WBC Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury, who has no fights finalized.
Last year, the WBC ordered a series of eliminators to establish a new mandatory challenger for the Gypsy King, in which Andy Ruiz won a twelve round decision over Luis Ortiz, and Deontay Wilder crushed Robert Helenius in one round.
Wilder and Ruiz were then ordered to meet in an eliminator, but the two sides never came close to a deal with the Mexican last seen running away over the horizon, across the border and south through Mexico into Guatamala!
