Jude 22-23

And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

Beloved in verses 22-23, Jude is telling the church that we are called to show mercy to everyone, even our enemies. Some Christians struggle in their faith and need compassion. Others need to be powerfully snatched from the fire. In other words, redirected them from a behavior or relationship that will burn them.

In verses 22-23 Jude is making reference to three groups. One group is doubt.

Verse 22: And have mercy on those who doubt;

. “have mercy on those who doubt.” There is some question among Greek scholars as to the correct translation of this verse. Instead of “making a difference,” I prefer the interpretation “who are in doubt.” There are a great many people today who are in doubt. They do have honest doubts, and we need to be patient with them. Being in the ministry I confess, that sometimes I struggle in being patient with some folk. Beloved listen, you can’t witness to everybody alike. What do you mean? What I mean is that People are different, people have different temperaments.

Some you’ve got to tell them about the fire of hell. Others are drawn by God's love, that is in Christ Jesus. Some are drawn by compassion making a difference, others, by fear, pulling them out of the fire. Beloved we have to be led by the Spirit as we deal with people.

Listen, we are living in days when there is so much doubt cast upon the Word of God. We do well to be patient with them—they are honest doubters. (We all have been there) They are to be treated with consideration and kindliness. Doubt is sometimes the result of a misunderstanding of the truth. That’s why it is so important to preach the gospel.

Another group is the group that is been snatched out of the fire. This second group must be confronted more strongly (verse 23) save others by snatching them out of the fire: listen snatching them out of the fire means that they were close to the fire of God’s judgment. (Do you know anyone close to the fire of God’s judgment?)

These others close to the fire of God’s judgment are committed to the errors taught by the apostates, false teachers, and false pastors, listen they need immediate and straightforward, upfront, and direct attention before they are further entrenched on the road to the fire of hell (cf. Jud_1:7) as a result of embracing misleading lies.

The last group is the group that has their clothing stained by the flesh. (verse 23)

This third group also needs mercy, even though they are downright polluted by apostate teaching. These people are to be given the true gospel, but with great fear, lest the one who has been sent to give them the gospel, be contaminated also. hating even the garment stained by the flesh. Implies hating the sin and everything connected with it; but the sinner himself should be treated with mercy rather than hatred.
